Wahi & Soames lead Nomads to comfortable victory at Blackheath

Nomads defeated the Gaieties on Sunday in the pre-cursor to the eagerly awaited Pinter, Gooding & Lamb match which will take place at Ascott Park later on in the season. Gaieties skipper James Schneider won the toss and elected to bat on a decent looking deck, with the outfield more than a touch of brown after the recent hot weather. Indeed, forecast for the Blackheath area was for temperatures to be touching 30 degrees and blue skies all day.

Northwood’s Stu Reeve and Blacheath debutant Rahi opened the bowling for the Nomads and Reeve struck early, James Schneider bowled offering no shot to a delivery that nipped back and clattered into his off stump. Rahi was wicket less but bowled with good pace and control. Brockton and Soames bowled tightly, Oliver Soames striking almost immediately with his skiddy medium pace as Gaieties fast start began to fade in the face of some accurate bowling and good fielding.

Charlie Dickins was looking tidy behind the sticks (asalways) and the runs started to dry up. Debutant Josh Drague (Chesham and Bucks U18s) pulled off a fantastic one handed diving stop at backward point and in a flash had thrown to Soames who ran out the bemused batter who was well short of his ground.

All during this period Tim Schneider was compiling another well-crafted knock, taking no changes but punishing the bad ball. Gerard Soames kept up the good work and at 150-7 Nomads had eyes on bowling Gaieties out for appreciably under 200. However Chris Page continued his poor form, and this lack lustre spell got Gaieties up to 195, Gerard Soames recalled to take the final wicket , father and son had 6 between them as Gaieties score was probably 40-50 underpar on decent pitch and fast outfield.

Vic Kandampully’s girl friend Laura had kindly assisted in doing the tea at Blackheath CC and her homemade sausage rolls went down a treat with a cold drink in the summer sunshine.

Vic and Drage opened for the Nomads and put on 50 in good time before Kandampully’s back luck continued as he was bowled off his backside and arm,the ball trickling harmlessly onto the leg stump for him to be cruelly dismissed for 19 when looking well set.

Oliver Soames joined Drague who was taking a liking to both opening bowlers and got to 50 in quick time with 10 boundaries before chipping to Schneider. Soames was also out soon after mis-hitting to backward point(caught Thurston). However Nomads had a lot of batting left in the truck (Reeve at 7, Brockton at 8) and Wahi depositied his first ball over the club house for a mighty 6.  Gaieties realised their total was not nearly enough and a few “change” bowlers were used, this only accelerated the Nomads scoring rate and Wahi finished as he started with a 6,this time to win the game and take him to a aggressive 67*, his highest score for the club. Nomads did lose Rahi and Ellis additionally in the run chase but ran out worthy winners by 5 wickets with 12 overs of the 20 remaining.

Both sides enjoyed a few cold beverages in the evening summer sunshine, the injured Nomads president Michael Blumberg was present and oversaw a good game of cricket between two long standing adversaries. We look forward to renewing acquaintances at Ascott Park later on in the season. Our thanks for Vic Kandampully and Blackheath CC for hosting us.
