Nomads let their grip slip then nearly flounder
Veterans Nomads Oliver Croom-Johnson and Michael Blumberg saw off the last four overs to draw the match against Hampshire Hogs , a match which arguably they should have won with some ease.James While won the toss and inserted Hogs on a damp pitch. Croom-Johnson and While opened the bowling, Croomers on target but While somewhat astray so that 1st slip Steve Dean placed himself at leg slip. Hogs opening pair perservered until Rob Woods replaced While. His left arm variation was to proove lethal before lunch with the ball leaping off a length. Croomers removed the number three while Woods removed the middle order. Leg spinner Alex Scott bamboozled Lowe so Hogs went into lunch five down with little over a hundred on the board. That they had any score was due to the diligent Olly Kelly who nurdled his way plus a lot of cuts and pulls to a good fifty.
After an excellent lunch Nomads rather lost the plot as the formerly lively pitch became lifeless and veryslow after Bazalgette had remonstrated with James that Nomads must give them some runs to enable a decent declaration.Catches and a run out were 'refused' in comical circumstances. As a result Browne(63) and Kelly(105) added a further 126 runs and Hogs declared at 253-8 off 58.5 overs rather more than James intended and Bazalgette had hoped for.
Nomads with a powerful batting line up should have chased down this easily in the 46 overs left. However a spate of cavalier shots and good catching by Hogs reduced Nomads to 85-5. Milton,Woods and Scott revived the innings adding 117 runs but with their loss the innings fizzled out. Mike Geller achieved the unspeakable- being out, hit wicket, to Christopher Bazalgette.
