Tense finish in SW6

With one over to go Hurlingham need 11 to win and Nomads required one wicket. One run off the first ball from James While brought Paul Wheeler number 11 to face. A shout for lbw was turned down and then Paul stalwartly resisted  the next four balls to draw the match. Not quite the excitement of the morning at Edgbaston but a tense finish none the less'

Both clubs had struggled to field an eleven. Nomads suffered five late withdrawals, three to injury and a fourth to alcohol significantly including wicket keeper batsman Keith Alexander. So thanks to Kamlash and Rakesh Patels, Richard Fanthorp and Russell Mann. Hurlingham had to make 45 calls to raise XI.

Nomads won the toss and elected to bat despite the overhelming distraction of the match at Edgbaston,Charles Fellows-Smith earphones glued to test match special shouted out the score as Jeremy Lascelles faced Hurlingham's young fast bowler Roundall. Roundall was definitely club very fast and enjoyed the short delivery. Jeremy suffered the indignity of missing most deliveries and taking most of the rest on his body until yorked much to his own relief.

Jemile and While then countered Roundall well with a few runs accruing before Jemile was adjudged lbw for an appeal for a catch and departed very disgruntled for 24.The innings gained momentum with Andy Stokes at the crease but he chased an awful wide long hop and was well caught by gully for 20 ten minutes before lunch. The interval came with Nomads soundly based at 125-3.

Nomads lost two wickets soon after lunch but then Andy Smith supported James While resolutely so another 60 runs were added before James While was bowled by Wheeler eight short of his century.Rakash Patel fell for a duck but  Russell Mann held firm despite damaging a thumb as another 30 runs were added.Smith was to fall short of his fifty at 235. Fanthorpe added seven runs during which he had an interesting altercation with a Tichener-Barrett but they made it up after the match. Nomads declared at 259-9 off 51 overs, a total well below par for the Hurlingham ground.

After a steady opening of 41 against While and Al-Darraji  the run shy Jenkins was trapped lbw by While,41-1. However Defty was scoring freely and another 52 runs were added before K Patel removed the rest of the top order including the run machine Sean Morris,99-4.

Roundell joined Defty and theses two looked likely to win thw match for the home side adding 109 whereupon a returing While bowled Defty and Al-Darraji in his second spell removed Roundell and two more, 231-8.

Ted Beckwith and Baring added another 15 runs nudging ever close to victory when Baring was run out,246-9. At the start of the last over 11 runs were required with Beckwith facing. A few mighty blows and the home side would be victors. In the event he swung but scored a single leaving veteran Paul Wheeler to block out the last five balls with close fielders surrounding him.

A excellent contest with much to speculate upon in the bar afterwards where Nomads lingered until closing time.

Nomads have played at Hurlingham since the early 1950s with a break between 1985 and 2003.
