Nomads much vaunted batting line up comes unstuck

Nomads lost to Hampshire Hogs by a considerable margin on Sunday in a game played at a high tempo from start to finish. Unfortunately the wicket was not what both sides had hoped for and stayed low/slow throughout the match. Hampshire Hogs skipper Toby Clowes won the toss and elected to bat. Nomads were short of bowling but Johnno Gordon returned from a back injury to bowl impressively in his opening spell. Well supported by “flat jack” off-spinner David Steele the opening encounter well negotiated by Olly Kelly and his batting partner.

A change in the bowling produced the first two wickets to fall as skipper Tom Brockton (10-2-26-2) introduced himself into the attack and quickly trapped Kelly LBW with a nip-backer. David Steele had dropped a sharp caught and bowled chance and Ronnie Patel an easier opportunity at mid-off, however Brockton claimed the 2nd wicket courtesy of clean bowling the Hogs opening bat who had just past 50.

Sachin Puri and Marcus Budgen were then introduced into the attack and Puri in-particular bowled impressively, conceding just 26 from his 10 overs. He should have had a wicket on the stroke of lunch but the opportunity was put down by Charlie Peerless at short mid on. Hogs went into lunch well placed on 127-2 after 36 overs. After a delicious spread for lunch Johnno Gordon was reintroduced into the attack and his 19 overs in the match went for just 51 runs, but alas he was to remain wicketless.

All this time Smith and MacLaren added 152 for the 3rd wicket but for a period after lunch became bogged down delaying the declaration especially as Nomads skipper had informed his opposite number that nomads had aformidable batting line up. When Smith had reached the “nervous 90’s” that he offered his first chance, a dolly to short cover, Steele the jubilant bowler. Nomads were then further rewarded (again Steele the successful bowler) with another wicket, this time LBW. However, Hogs were now passed 250 mark and Chakraboti was wielding the willow as the declaration loomed. Captain Clowes finally called time on the Hogs innings with a considerable total of over 280 on the board, and 69 (yes, 69!) overs bowled by the Nomads bowlers

West Herts & Shepherds Bush cricketers Kie Farrell and Sachin Puri opened up for the visitors with a good record of steady run accumulation but both were dismissed cheaply having their timbers re-arranged early in the run-chase, one from an uncharacteristic 'head in the air, swipe. Johnno Gordon was unfortunate to be given out caught behind off the accurate slow-medium bowling of Dick Aldridge (who would end the day with 6 wickets) and even after a few lusty leg-side blows from Marcus Budgen Nomads were in trouble at 60-3 at tea. A further 220+ required.

After the tea interval Nomads lost wickets at regular intervals, the leg spin of the Hogs Errol Flyn look a like caused real problems and both Charlie Peerless and Andy Hill were victims of playing with hard hands and offering catches to the close fielders, Budgen was bowled by one from Aldridge that kept low, and Rupert Style after a grafting innings was adjudged LBW. Nomads were now on the rack but keeper David Williams who is in fine form after a 70 at Beckenham counter-attacked with a flurry of boundaries to get Nomads up and over the 150 mark.

Ronnie Patel attempted a foolish run to the man at backward square and was run out with a direct hit and David Steele had his stumps re-arranged. David Williams and Brockton batted for some 13 overs together without further incident but with the draw in sight and Williams past a well deserved 50 he was brilliantly caught in the gully off the bowling of Aldridge. Nomads all out well short of the Hogs target with just over 5 overs remaining.

A very disappointing performance indeed with the bat. One may well ask why the club's leading run scorer batted a number 11! The fact that number 8 hit the top score of 66 emphasised the lack of application on the day of many of those higher in the order.

An oddity of this game was the presence of 12 Nomads at the start. As a result it was agreed with Hogs skipper that Nomads would field 11 and bat 12. However when Nomads number 11 reached the square this agreement was abandoned and so number 12 took off his pads and wondered why he had fielded for several hours! Doubtless this offer was quickly agreed to by the Hogs skipper in the knowledge that Nomads number 12 had never been dismissed by Hogs wearing Nomads colours!

Nomads had the support of Mr & Mrs Puri Sachin's parents as well as Marcus Budgen's Father and Grandparents. Sadly this support did not inspire Sachin or Marcus on this occassion. Nomads were pleased to meet Hogs legend Christopher Bazalgette yet again and in good form.

It seems a long time since we thoroughly defeated Hogs on our first visit in the modern era to this grand setting.
