Ninth wicket pair thwart Nomads
On Sunday Nomads batted first at Oxford Downs and found scoring runs mighty difficult, first against a diminutive left arm seamer and then a succession of slow bowlers matched by excellent fielding from the mostly young Downs' side. Olly Smith and David Steele had a first wicket stand of 38 that used up many an over before Olly and quickly Charles Perrless number 3 fell. Eventually Steele found momentum only to hit a full toss straight to a waiting fielder.
Andy Hill and Marcus Budgen struggled to raise the run rate but added another 50 odd before Andy succumbed and his namesake and skipper was soon to follow hitting straight to deep mid off. Ross Ormiston hit a quick 17 and with Marcus now finding his timing, the innings belatedly gained momentum so that by the declaration we had amassed 206-8 off 41 overs with Marcus 70 not out. Downs had bowled 41 overs in not much under three hours so it was a generous declaration.
After a very good tea Ben Smith, seam and Ross Ormiston, leg spin had Downs in trouble at 55-4. The skipper Watts and partner Gillam now put on a swift 68 runs swinging the game away from Nomads. It was a brilliant low an accurate throw from Andy Hill in the covers that changed the game running out the skipper on 50 going for a second run. Downs' innings now ground to a halt with David Steele and Andrew Smith tigtening the noose. Steele took two wickets and Smith one leaving Downs 154-8 with some 8 overs to go.
Despite the minute G Watts surviving many a near catch, he and the elder Crouch saw off Nomads, all crowded round the bat to save the match. A draw but an intriguing game in which the ascendency swung to and fro.
