Nomads well beaten despite Terblanche's superb ton

Nomads were soundly defeated by a mainly young Gaieties eleven at Trinity College Ground on Sunday.

Nomads had suffered the loss of five of the original selection but still had a decent side out on paper. Unfortunately Charlton Lamb became a victim of Net Rail's Sunday timetable frivolity, so we fielded ten in the end.

Perhaps frustrated by last year's tame draw Hugo Thurston, having won the toss, invited Nomads to bat. By the time rain stopped play briefly soon after 3.00pm they may have been rueing their decision such was the dominance of Abdul Satter and Deleray Terblanche. After 20 overs the score was 153-1 and Nomads seemed to be heading for a formidable total in quick time.

However the game was turned on its head with the introduction of wrist spinner James Schneider who soon had Abdul lbw for 68. Deleray soon reached his century only to miscue next ball and be caught off Shomit Dutta. There then followed a farcical collapse as the middle order took no notice of the pitch and were caught driving and pulling too early. 168-1 became 190-6. Andy Hill hit some sixes but then he got himself bowled seeking a single off the last ball of the over to keep strike.

Ramesh Mantha making his debut for Nomads hit a couple of valuable fours before falling lbw to a full toss from Schneider. So Nomads were all out for 235 in the 38th over,30 odd short on this ground..Schneider finished with 5-34 and Dutta who had taken a lot of punishment in his first eight overs finished with 3-53.

After an excellent tea provided by the Gaieties, Terblanche and Khan opened to bowling and looked likely to take wickets when they got their length right. Richard Woolhouse was dropped early by Andy Smith off Terblanche and this proved costly.

Gaieties' openers. Woolhouse eccentric and Carter steady, put on over 150 for the first wicket, most their runs coming from short balls as well as a lot of snicks and miscues which raced to the boundary on the fast outfield. Eventually Woolhouse was run out for 68. Andy Smith had replaced Terblanche while Abdul Satter bowled at the other end. Both deceived the batsmen at times but were likewise punished when their length strayed.

Nomads were leaking singles so Gaieties maintained the run rate comfortably as they approached their target. The skipper finally bowled an over conceding but three runs and the next over Carter smote another boundary to win the match and reach 116 not out.

In retrospect the skipper should have rotated the bowling more, introduced himself much earlier and tried the left arm seam of Ramesh Mantha. Perhaps!.

Afterwards a good body of Nomads and Gaieties quaffed several ales and lagers, confirmed the rematch for 2011 and some silly sods were fined £100 for not reading the parking tariff properly.£1 from 8pm to 8am Hm!

Six of this Gaieties side have played for Nomads CC.
