Nomads batting no match for Tiddington's bowlers

Nomads succumbed to a strong Tiddington XI on Saturday by the margin of 58 runs avenging their defeat from last season when Yorkshire and England lions cricketer Jack Brooks was put two the sword by a rampant Stuart Reeve. After a slightly delayed start due to a damp outfield and players finishing their pre-cricket beverages Tiddington skipper Nick Pykett won the toss and elected to bat on a decent enough looking deck. With the covers removed shortly before the start of play the wicket had fortunately not been adversely damaged by the heavy overnight rain.

Once again without Sajjad Shawl, Jarod Schmidt or Ben Smith (or any bowlers who push it through at more than a military medium pace) David Steele was yet again intrusted with the new ball along with the reliable Andrew Smith. Tiddington openers Pykett and Aris took about the Nomads bowlers with much fervour as this was their last game of the season. Indeed, such was their aggressive intent that the century partnership for the home side came up in just the 12th over. Steele and Smith were unusually expensive, but Nomads did not help themselves with Ronnie Patel dropping a simple enough chance at long-on and veteran Peter Sumner unable to get to a miss-timed clip at mid-wicket.

Brockton introduced himself into the attack and immediately cleaned up Pykett who had just reached a robust 50. Parke was then to follow for a 2nd ball globe as he drilled a full delivery straight into the clutches of Charlie Peerless who as stationed at short cover, and when Peter Sumner removed the burly Aris for 69 as he audaciously attempted to reverse sweep the experienced seamer Tiddington were 190-3 after 28 overs. Brockton rotated his bowlers wisely and aided by some impressive fielding from Chris “Gas” Chambers, Kie Farrell and debutant Chris Harries the visitors started to chip further away at the powerful Tiddington batting order.

Steele and Smith were re-introduced and picked up 5 wickets between them in much improved 2nd spells and although Goodman and Cooper swung the willow gamefully, taking an instant liking to the medium pace of Chambers, Nomads were still very much in the match. The returning Brockton ended the innings with his 3rd scalp on his way to 3-31 from 8 overs when Steele easily took a chipped drive from the tall Noble to bowl out the home side for 246. A very good performance (from the 15th over onwards) for Nomads with Tiddington collapsing from 123-0 to 246 all out. Rohan Ghosh impressing behind the sticks with 2 stumpings and some impressive leg-side work.

Kie Farrell and Chris Chambers opened up for the Nomads knowing a solid opening partnership would be vital in chasing down what was a daunting total (although a score of 300+ would have been expected after the fast start that Tiddington got off to). The pair got to 33 after 5 overs before Farrell was snaffled at 2nd slip for 15. Ghosh (bowled by an absolute beauty) and Harries soon followed, the impressive Vaughan running his way through the Nomads order. He also accounted for Peerless who feathered a catch behind and then had Chambers (37) caught by the young Desai who would impress with his leg-spin later on in the innings. Nomads had slumped from 33-0 to 67-5 after 15 overs.

Brockton and Smith then added a century partnership in 19 overs with the pair batting assertively in the face of an ever rising run rate. Brockton reached his 50 with a square drive for 4 off the bowling of the off-spinner Benjamin Smith but with overs fast running out and the Tiddington young fielding side excelling the pair were not able to find the boundaries on a regular enough basis. Smith (38) was acrobatically caught at cover, a diving effort from Cooper dismissing the ex-Scotland cricketer. Brockton was taken by skipper Pykett at full stretch at long-on for 73 and the Nomads innings subsided with Steele out first ball. Bowler Park making amends for his earlier duck with three quick wickets. Ronnie Patel (10 not out) and Michael Blumberg then batted out the final 4 overs, Nomads reaching on 188-8 from their 40 overs giving Tiddington a deserved win by 58 runs.

Nomads relaxed in the bar post match and enjoyed the usual Tiddington custom. A tasty Thai curry was also produced later on in the evening, President Blumberg and Ronnie Patel were seen having their 3rd helpings by several surprised onlookers. Our thanks to Nick Pykett and his Tiddington side for once again making us so welcome at their pretty ground in Oxfordshire.
