Easy win for Nomads in Tour Opener

On a beautiful sunny day with the Woodbridge Oval looking lush and green the Forty Club won the toss and chose to bat first. Forty club soon lost two wickets and struggled to score against accurate bowling well supported in the field. Cameos from Kevin Laundon and Kieran Perman lifted the score to 52-4 off 20.4 overs. That Forty Club reached any total at all was due to a good innings from young Jack Perman who had played a match for Nomads in England in July, he hit an undefeated 61 including 5 x 4s and one six. He was well supported by Stephen Sandri and these two put on 47 for the sixth wicket so the innings closed on 135 after 40 overs. The skipper had used six bowlers to good effect.

Following an excellent tea Paul Wakefield and Keith Alexander opened for Nomads. Alexander struck two early fours but soon out in the fifth over to veteran bowler John Braithwaite and run machine Jon Thornton(over 4000 runs in 2017) soon followed in the 10th over bowled by Kieran Perman. Young George Metcalfe and Wakers now added 75 runs whereupon having reached fifty Wakers retired out to give time at the crease to some further batsmen.Ten runs later Metcalfe was stumped off Phil Pennick for 29,128-3. Kyle Bradley joined Bill Johnson and these two saw Nomads home to an easy victory in the 30th over.

The lush green outfield had made boundaries along the ground hard to achieve and this was to be a feature of the next three matches requiring a lot of running between the wickets.

Veterans Johnson and Ormiston swing the match Nomads' Way

Skipper Bill Johnson won the toss and elected to bat first. A cavalier approach to opening from Ollie Barnes was entertaining but soon ended.Nigel Hussey was yorked by Kieran Perman soon after and with Alan Ormiston rather needlessly run out Nomads were struggling at 46-3. Kyle Bradley was finding runs hard to come by and so at drinks Nomads were but 67-3 off 20 overs. Having struck his second boundary he was out next ball for 30 off 70 balls in the 27th over,91-4. The momentum of the innings now changed with Jason Caunt attacking the bowling and Bill Johnson accelerating so much so that these two added 82 off 82 balls before Caunt was caught by Mark Perman off Sandri,173-4. Ross Ormiston joined Johnson and a further 26 runs were added so Nomads closed on 196-5 off 40 overs.Nomads had scored 132 runs off the second 20 overs.

Another excellent tea obviously agreed with Jason Caunt as he quickly took two early wickets   but Paul Wakefield's wrist spin at the other end was being punished. The introduction of Ross Ormiston who had been unable to bowl for most of the season was to prove crucial as he  soon had Gary Crompton out caught by Bill Johnson having already survived a dropped catch the over before. Ross was to take a further two wickets Sandri and Kieran Perman and Kevin Laundon was run out by Kyle Bradley leaving Sporting Alfas in a perilous position,118-6 off 28.1 overs.

Graham Ward once of Javea CC now joined Jack Perman and despite carrying a ham string injury another 69 runs were added. Indeed with five overs to go Sporting Alfas needed 49 for victory. Nigel Hussey and Ollie Barnes went for 28 off 3 overs but Nigel restriced Alfas to just 6 runs off his last over. So Alfas needed 15 off the last over with Jack Perman on strike on 59. The skipper turned to Keith Alexander to bowl the last over. Keith had kept wicket on Friday but handed over the gloves to Kevin Smith on Saturday. This was to prove a potent combination. Both batsmen could only strike a couple of singles before Jack Perman swung lustily and missed to be stumped. Andy Dell played out a dot ball and Nomads had won by 12 runs. Phew!

What a catch! Nomads win by 28 runs

Solid knocks from Wakefield and Thornton and a fluent fifty from Ross Ormiston helped Nomads to a decent total on another sunny day at the Woodbridge Oval. The last four overs only added some 12 runs but 205 looked to be a reasonable total to defend despite Nomads being one man short. Several tourists had been given exeats for the day and Simon Barter was supposed to be playing. However the delayed arrival of Matt Jefferson who last played for Nomads on the rain ruined 2003 October tour kept Simon at the airport instead of imposing his large presence at the Woodbridge Oval.

Ten men was to prove no problem for Nomads as Keith Alexander now promoted to opening bowler took two wickets in his first over. Nigel Hussey accounted for Mark Perman caught by Ross Ormiston at slip. Then Ross removed number 5 and 6 so Sporting Alfas were 92-5  off 19.5 overs and at drinks Jack Perman was 57 not out somewhat contoversially!. After drinks in the 27th over Jack Perman was caught and bowled by Wakefield,128-6. Darren Walker took up the challenge but lost partners steadily until with the last ball of the 37th over John Hardy had the very young Kyle Roper well caught one handed by the very ancient Nomads President at slip. Darren Walker was undefeated on 34. Nomads had won by 28 runs.

Nomads continue winning streak

Sporting Alfas were short for Monday so Nomads lent them two players. Paul Wakefield was in excellent form striking 68 off 58 balls. Altruistlicaly throwing his wicket away after drinks Wakers was to precipitate a Nomads collapse, three more wickets falling for 3 runs. Simon Barter playing for Nomads at the Woodbridge Oval for the first time since March 2009 failed to bother the scorers. Jason Caunt, Nigel Hussey and Ross Ormiston then restored the momentum of the innings so that Nomads posted a healthy 196-8 off 35 overs. Phil Pennick bowling very slow flighted spin finished with 5-48 off 11 overs.

Jason Caunt removed Jack Perman in the first over caught by Ross Ormiston at slip. Kevin Laundon was run out by Simon Barter via a mix up with George Metcalfe. Then Jason removed Metcalfe and Briggs and Keith Alexander accounted for Kevin Smith caught by Alan Ormiston. Alfas were reeling at 29-5 in the 13th over. The innings did not recover with John Hardy taking two wickets and Alan Ormiston one reducing the innings to 44-8. Tim Arnes and Geoff Evans added 28 before Alexander in a second spell trapped Arnes lbw. In strode Mrs Cale Briggs who remained undefeated on 2 as the innings closed 76-9 off 35 overs.

Nomads had won all four matches at the Woodbridge Oval for the first time ever with all four games being played in beautiful warm sunny weather. Many thanks indeed to Sporting Alfas for all their hospitality.

Paul Wakefield scored 162 runs in three innings for Nomads. Jack Perman scored 208 runs against us in 4 innings. Jason Caunt on his first Nomads tour topped the wicket takers with six off three games with Keith Alexander and Ross Ormiston both taking five.
