Vib and Gish centuries set up Nomads victory
Nomads have been playing Oxford Downs for some 34 years but this was the first time we had played in Cricket Week. Furthermore as a Sunday fixture they had invariably put out a decent side so Nomads selected a strong side with an excellent mix of youth and experience. We did not therefore expect to dominate the day's play as it turned out.
Nomads won the toss and batted. Both openers scored centuries, Vib Yadav fluently and teenage Gish Herath much slower. Both were retired out. Alex sykes hit a quick fifty before the declaration came at 314 off 50 overs. Skipper Bill Johnson used nine bowlers in order to winckle out the Downs batsmen, four seamers, two wrist spinners and three veteran but crafty flight and finger spinners.
Costly and Chahal put on 79 for the second wicket but then wickets fell steadily.Meardon with 48 added some middle order solidity but timely wickets from Mark Surridge and then Alex Sharam precipitated a lower order collapse and Tom Marshall returning with pace removed number 11 to give Nomads victory by 79 runs.
Oxford Downs were excellent hosts providing a sumptious lunch plus Port followed by an equally splendid tea. Nomads were supportd by Paul Maloney, family and friends. Nomads lingered long on a fine summer's evening.
