A Blumberg fifer helps Nomads to victory

On Bank Holiday Monday we defeated the Carlton Club fairly comfortably but not before we had done our best to self destruct ! Some very curious bowling which produced some 22 wides but could with a stricter umpire have been 44 nevertheless accounted for Abdul Satter, Nick Cooper, James Howgate and Debbie. The Carlton Club comprised a very mixed side including four young men from Spencer CC who popped up in the field whenever Nomads were indiscreet enough to mishit in the air.

Tony Harlow and Steve Marians repaired the innings and when Tony was out for 37 Charlton Lamb joined Steve producing another useful partnership yet way short of their combined ages circa 140. Eventually the innings was declared after tea for 234 off 45 overs.

James Howgate and David Macvicar accounted for the openers and had Harlow held onto a catch off Howgate the game may well have finished early. As it was Flynn drove and cut well to record 74 and threaten victory for Carlton Club as the fielding inadequacies of Nomads were exposed. We were only nine and that included five ancient non runners. The exceptions were James Howgate who was brilliant in the field and Debbie who showed a good turn of speed in the field and a decent throw.

After 16 overs of seam the skipper turned to the guile, wiles and flighted filth of Blumberg and Satter and whenever the President answered the despairing cries of the skipper for more air took wickets, five in all and Abdul took three. So we ran out victors by 50 runs and retired for a long and enjoyable session at the nearest pub.

We had two no shows for this game which is ridiculous as others wished to play and no communication that they were not coming. No shows not only makes it difficult for the side on the day it also leaves the club short of funds. Please don't do this again!
