NPL Teddington could not raise a side for the scheduled match so Nomads hired the ground and played themselves & Lashings. Some 25 players turned up plus Bill Rodwell who scored. Another Nomad cried off injured from the game the day before and there were two more ‘reserves’ in case we were short! As 8 of those present were also part of the Lashings Cricket Club the match was played between Nomads(12) and Lashings/Nomads(13),12 to bat and 11 to field with the later side captained by Lashings founder and chief executive David Folb.
A very enjoyable game ensued with Nomads struggling on the slow pitch to play shots, some committing suicide and others being well defeated by the bowlers. Kumal Seth took 3 wickets reducing Nomads to 66-5. However Andy and Richard Brooke then put together useful partnerships with Jeremy Lascelles who battled on to an undefeated 86 at the declaration which was on reflection a triffle late.
Lashings employed nine bowlers including both Mr and Mrs Olonga in tandem. Middleton Mann took two late wickets as Nomads declared on 183-7 after 41 overs bowled at a leisurely pace-2hours 40 minutes. A lengthy tea restricted Lashings’ available overs somewhat so they needed to score around 6 an over and in a sporting endeavour to acheive this lost many of their wickets. They lost both classy young openers for but 27 one to a silly run out. The dangerous Wooderson miscued and was caught and bowled by Joe Ireland at 43 whereupon some lusty blows from both Andy Thompson and Henry Olonga took the score to 83 whereupon Ireland bowled Thompson.
When skipper David Folb was bowled by Andy Smith at 108-7 the innings quest looked lost especailly as Olonga was hobbling and in pain. However some more huge blows took him to 59 and the outside chance of an improbable victory. At this point Andy Smith had a remakable spell. Hit for 4,6,6 by Henry Olonga he then bowled him and two balls later bowled Middleton Mann. With the first ball of his next over he bowled Mrs Tara Olonga to complete a ‘Michele’. Lashings/Nomads were all out 134.
A very good post match session was then enjoyed which finally finished around 1130 for the stalwarts, two of whom rushed off to Leicester Square where Rohan Gavaskar was patiently waiting for them. Nomads CC is very grateful to NPL for letting us use their ground for what turned out to be an extremely good day despite the dire warnings of the meteorologists who forecast a deluge. Likewise the club looks forward to the return of the Lashings element later in the summer and is very thankful for their input this May.
