Nomads tie in exciting drawn finish to glorious day

Nomads made their first trip to Chingford CC on Bank Holiday Monday and played out a hugely entertaining fixture under glorious blue skies and warm weather.

Chingford won the toss and unsurprisingly elected to bat first on what looked like an absolute road. Sajjad Shawl and Will Vincent took the new cherry for Nomads and although both bowled with pace and venom the score had reached 40 before Vincent took the first wicket to fall, courtesy of a well snaffled swirler from the ever reliable hands of Rupert Style.

It seemed pace off the ball was the order of the day and Oliver Croom Johnson was just the man for the job, and in tandem with Shepherds Bush cricketer Sachin Puri starved the Chingford batsmen of runs. Puri was rewarded with the wicket of the other Chingford opener and after 20 overs the home side were scoring sedately at 4 an over.

The match changed with the introduction of England seniors player Keith Alexander who deceived the Chingford skipper into chipping a length delivery back to him and then produced the ball of the day to knock back the off-pole of their Australian overseas pro for a first ball duck. Debutant Clint Wolverson impressed in a fine spell of medium-fast bowling and Shawl returned to end the resistance of the leg-side favouring Chingford youngster. Nomads restricting the visitors to 228 from 44 overs.

An impressive bowling display, aided by some intelligent fielding. Warwick Ulrich was excellent behind the stumps. Mike Plant and Rupert Style opened up for Nomads with Plant in superb touch. Style on the other hand was not finding things as easy and after 25 overs Nomads had just ticked past the 100 mark. Style was then stumped for 40, clearly trying to up the scoring rate. The big hitting Wolverson was shunted up the order to get Nomads back on track, and although he deposited his first ball straight out of the ground for a massive 6 he was unfortunate to be run out after a mix up with Plant who had just past 50. Brockton joined Plant and the pair forged a partnership of just over 100 runs in 17 overs.

Brockton content with pushing the single where possible and giving Plant the strike who was now in full flow and finding the boundary with consummate ease. 3 overs left and 18 runs needed.... Brockton was then cleaned up by the returning Chingford overseas pro as he drove over the top of a full length ball, and although the mighty Sajjad Shawl found the boundary once he was the immediately adjudged LBW. 7 from the final over quickly became 2 off the final ball.

Sachin Puri clipped a full delivery off his pads to the deep midwicket boundary and turned for a 2nd run. The arrow-like throw from the Chingford overseas was flatand more importantly accurate. Puri unfortunately just short of his crease. Nomads had finished on 228-4, agonisingly 1 run short from what would have been a memorable victory. Pretty much the whole XI stayed behind for a few beers in the early summer sunshine. Sajjad Shawl generously buying a jug to toast the birth of his 3rd child and Mike Plant to celebrate his 2nd Nomads century of the season, 125 not out for the classy cricketer from the Midlands.
