Nomads batting fails the challenge
Nomads took a team including several debutants to Harpenden, a couple of youngsters and a lot of experience yet the balance of the batting was upset when Alex Sykes turned up with an injured foot and was unable to play. When Tom Marshall was adjudged lbw for 2 that was the end of any hope that Nomads could chase the target set by Harpenden's young side. Debutant Henry Colburn who has been batting on the synthetic pitch at Standard Athletic for some years had a scratchy start back on turf but became increasingly confident ending up on 89 not out. With skipper Brockton some 68 runs had been added at a brisk pace for the first wicket but he fell carelessly bowled for 36. Colburn then took the score to 102 whereupon Nomads collapsed in dramatic fashion, five wickets falling for just 12 runs.
Kevin Smith held up one end as Henry Colburn advanced the score to 166 before Kevin was bowled and the Nomads innings closed on a very inadequate 168-7 and Henry Colburn 89 not out.
Earlier some wayward bowling had contributed to some 42 extras when Harpenden having won the toss elected to bat. Somewhat challenged in the field Nomads nevertheless seemed to be containing their host's innings quite well,141-4. However a stand of 107 for the fifth week transformed the innings as Galloway in particular punished Nomads bowling. Harpenden declared after 42 overs on 285-7 doubtless with previous Nomads batting prowess in mind. Last year Sanjay Beri and Paul Wakefield put on 189 for the first wicket and Vib Yadav,Jemile Al-Darraji,Vic Kandampully and Rupert Style never got to bat.
Once in a while perhaps these three Nomads top order batsmen would have all flourished and a serious challenge been mounted. In the event that did not happen and the game thus resulted in a poor contest but a decent draw considering Nomads' resources on the day.
Our three debutants enjoyed the day and were keen to play again. Several senior members lingered long at the bar afterwards but refrained from bursting into song as on previous occassions at Harpenden.
