Blakey’s knock & five for A-Marshall cant stave off defeat for Nomads
Nomads went down by the smallest of margins at Harpenden CC, who were keen to show off their new pavilion which was erected during the pre-season. The Hertfordshire Minor county ground looking resplendent in the late summer sunshine as the sides assembled. The fixture is part of the four pronged Harpenden cricket week, and we are delighted that this is Nomads fifth trip to the Herts Premier Division side, however the Nomads would taste defeat this time, he first in six visits.
Brockton won the toss, Nomads to bat. As this was a shorter game, declaration was agreed but with a quirk that the declaration would be mandatory at 4:30pm. Effectively a bastardised 40 over game with no bowling restrictions. Blake and Hussey opened the batting for Nomads and put on 54 in just 11 overs, Hussey looking in decent touch but 1 drive too many saw him on his way for a well made 29 as he spooned to mid-off. Former Slazenger Director Andy Peters strode in at no3 and in conjunction with Blake got the score to 98 before he top edged for 20, which included a straight driven 6 off Rashiaford.
Blake was approaching his 50, full of swats and swishes to leg (Galloway with a wry smile asked how many Blakey had scored on the off-side, Blakey responded by smashing him over mid-on for 4 the following ball) but Galloway had the last laugh, bowling the burly Chingford stalwart for 62. Brockton, who was knocking it around at the other end was then stupidly run out (34), not grounding his bat as he jogged back for a 2nd, some quick work from Sambrook saw him short of his ground. Nomads lost their way in the final 5 or so overs, George Duke struggled to get the ball away vs the accurate Galloway & Balkwill found himself having to go in and give it some long handle from ball 1. Nomads closed on 207-6 from 38 overs. We hoped to bowl 40 back at Harpenden.
A lovely tea followed and the Nomads were buoyed by two early wickets, Kujgahi was brilliantly caught by Balkwill at short cover and Brockton seemed to be completely asleep at point but reacted just in time as Beasley lashed a fierce cut at him, the Nomads skipper claiming the catch above his head. Harpenden 32-2 from 8 overs. The home side continued to loose wickets, with Chris Stride replacing Balkwill and taking 2 wickets, but Reeves was motoring along and seemed very adept at hitting powerfully in to out over the cover region. Stride was bowling with a Page esq defensive field, so there were plenty of 1s and 2s on offer, plus Blake was being targeted in the field (maybe they could hear the car keys and £7.22 of shrapnel in his pocket !).
The ever dependable Andy Marshall was called upon and did not disappoint, Kyle Bradley redeemed himself somewhat for what was (even for him) a very late arrival to the ground, with a very good catch standing up to Marshall, plus a neat stumping to dismiss Reeves, who batted well for his 56. However, this brought the dangerous Galloway to the crease. Marshall was equal to the task, dismissing Galloway for 14 as he swung out to long on where Balkwill pouched the chance, and Nomads sniffed victory.
Unfortunately Duke was getting some harsh treatment from Newton, despite not bowling badly and this meant the game was, yet again in the balance. Marshall bowled Croft with his quicker ball, or the one not bowled off 24 yards to complete a very impressive 5 wicket haul, and Bradley then Stumped Rashiaford to win the game for the Nomads…… no, given not out by Fellows-Smith, your author was stationed at point and had a very good view……. Definitely one to review!
The chance had gone, Bradley was disconsolate and with 1 over left Harpenden needed 5 to win. Young Jimmy Hamilton was given the chance to be a hero, Rashiaford scrambled a single and this got the more adept Newton back on strike. He was equal to the task, Hamilton went for the Yorker, only succeeding in bowling a long half volley which Newton smashed over cover and to the fence for 4. Harpenden winners by 1 wicket with 3 balls left.
Still waiting on the review for the stumping……… “Director to TV Umpire we have a review for a stumping”............
Our thanks to the every jovial Nick Stevenson, and Charles Fellows-Smith and for officiating as well we Steve Brewer for making the trip from Essex to score for the day. We wish Harpenden’s 7 league sides all the best for the remainder of the season and look forward to returning in 2020 to once again be part of the Harpenden CC cricket week.
