Welcome return for Wycherley but Nomads can't force the win

Nomads played out a very entertaining draw at the pretty settingof Surrey Championship side Esher on Friday with some notable performances. After some overnight rain captain for the day Andy Stokes bravely (some saidfoolishly, they were wrong) elected to bat upon wining the toss. Club Captain Brockton andclassy campaigner Wycherley opened up for the Nomads. The pair batted withcontrolled aggression putting on 105 in just 16 overs before Brockton, when looking well set, was caught behind for 48 off the “chirpy” Blackhurst who ranin with some gusto.

Oliver Smith’s stay at the crease was unfortunately a short one ashe prodded tamely back experienced left arm spinner Steven for a 4thball globe and Nomads began to loose the early momentum they had worked hard toachieve.  Wycherley was also then caughtbehind for a boundary laden 79 off the same bowler, scored at quicker than a run a ball and Smith Snr/Thornton got Nomads through to lunch in a decent position at 152-3.

After a cracking spread (and thank you to Duncan Pauline and hisstaff) Smith and Thornton found the going tough in the face of some accurateslow bowling and the rate which was up at 6 an over was now closer to 4.Thornton (33), A. Smith (15) & B.Smith (5) were all dismissed in quicksuccession and it was left to debutant and Bank of England speedster Kit Winderwith a quick-fire unbeaten 34, well supported by Nomads stalwart Joe Ireland(15*) to get the visitors to a score which most thought was par and no better.Nomads 240-6 from 51 overs.

Ben Smith opened with Winder and although the former was a littlewayward in the initial part of his spell both roared in. Winder was rewarded withwickets in his 2nd and 3rd overs as both Burton andSarren-Clare were bowled neck and crop for ducks. Smith was quickly into hisstride too, Wycherley taking a regulation catch of an absolute beauty todismiss Hopkinson. Esher now in a spot of bother at 31-3 and they would loose 2more wickets before they registered a hundred, spinners Ireland and Butchercombining to dismiss the dangerous former Northwood cricketer Alex Mason andalso veteran Woolhead for 20 and 24 respectively.

The 20 overs had commenced and although the Esher lower middleorder swung gamefully the introduction of the Bank of England’s Sanjay Trapanstifled any chance of their charge for Victory. Winder was re-introduced and hecleaned up Parish (Trapan having bowled Cook) and Esher had subsided to131-7.  In an entertaining twist, Smith Snrand Stokes also turned their arms over to little effect and Witton was able toadvance to an unbeaten half century by the time the 20 overs had finished.Esher closing on 221-8, Nomads 2 wickets short of victory, but importantlybowling 7 overs fewer at the home side. But for a stodgy middle part of the innings, necessitating a hesitationof the declaration Nomads would surely have won.

Both sides stayed late, beers drunk, stories told and watched cricket(Esher Under 15’s vs Cranleigh Under 15’s – with Mark Ealham umpiring no less). Our thanks to Ian Woolhead, Duncan Pauline and his staff for a thoroughly enjoyable day as well as Nomads Blumberg (umpire) Brewer (scorer) and Dummer(provider of high quality port) We hope this will become a regular fixture inthe Esher calendar.
