Sajjad Shawl too hot to handle at Ascott House

Nomads returned to Lord Rothschild's pretty ground at Ascott House, this time to play The Stoics. Nomads won the toss and inserted their guests on a green looking wicket. Sajjad Shawl was late (travelling back from business in Manchester) so Spanish international Jamie Roper and skipper Brockton opened the bowling.

Brockton removed the burly opener and Roper had his partner caught at mid-off by David Steele. 40-2. Shawl arrived and after 13 overs was introduced into the attack. He tore the heart out of the Stoics middle order, taking 5-12 in 8 overs. At the other end Chris Page wheeled away accurately and at lunch Stoics were reduced to 67-8. The highlight (and there were several) was a one handed pouch by Andy Smith at gully off the bowling of Shawl. Saurabh Wahi also took a couple of good catches behind the sticks, one standing up to David Steele was particularly impressive.

After a lunch that could only be described as spectacular, Page and Steele bowled accurately but Jeremy Bushell was batting with increasing confidence, so much so that Shawl and Brockton were recalled to the attack. Brockton had Bushell caught behind for a gritty 47 to end the Stoics resistance, all out for 122 just short of 45 overs. Nomads would have in the region of 60 overs to chase this modest total. Shawl's figures of 5-32 were a testament to his accuracy and penetration, albeit on a wicket that was tailor made for seam bowling.

Youth and experience opened up for the Nomads in the shape of young Tom Liversidge and Andy Stokes. The pair added 39 before Liversidge was LBW to the pacy Akeem Jordan, a former West Indian U19 cricketer. He then castled Andy Smith and when Stokes played-on for a well crafted 40 Nomads had been reduced to 60-3 at tea.

After the break Albon and Bridgewater bowled largely unsuccessful spells and the score moved onto 100 before Jordan was recalled, a last ditch throw of the dice from the Stoics skipper. He dismissed Ormiston (who was looking in good touch) and Steele, both caught behind, in quick succession to take a 5 wicket haul but a belligerent innings from Jamie Roper and some "stoic" defense from Brockton got Nomads over the line with 10 mins remaining before the commencement of the 20 overs. Nomads winners by the margin of 5 wickets.

Both sides retired to the local pub for some banter and a couple of pints in the evening sunshine. We look forward to continuing our friendly rivalry in 2016 with The Stoics. Ranjit Latchman was an interested on-looker for much of the game (a member of both sides) and Martin Pluck and wife of Stoics watched the game and visited the house and gardens.

To the best knowledge of both clubs this is the first match between Stoics and Nomads. Stoics is the older of the two being founded in 1877. Stoics was for most of its history unique among wandering clubs in that it only played mid week apart from the April tour to Cambridge.

There has always been a close connection between the clubs with many players being members of both. The late Gerald Plumbly former Life President of Stoics was also a Nomad and John Nagenda remains a Life Vice Presdent of both clubs. Currently Michael Blumberg, Ranjit Latchman, Nigel Kees, David MaVicar, Alastair Evans-Gordan, Kevin Smith, Stan Woolliscroft, Nigel Hussey and Tony Whiteway are members of both clubs and more have been members or played for both clubs-Babs Oduwole, Mike Ghersie, Chas Randall, Mike Dimatinna, Ben Way, James While, Amit Puri, CF Horne, Will Noble, Chris Heron. and many more.
