Nomads bowlers fail the task

A   veteran Nomads side was inserted and Paul Wakefield and Jeremy Lascelles made slow progress against gentle but accurate bowling recording a mere 21 runs after 10 overs  but accelerated to 80 off 20 overs. a bollocking from the skipper resulted in Lascelles playing all round a straight one so Nigel Kees joined Wakers. These two scored 147 off 20 overs with Keess running Wakers into exhaustion so having reached a century he missed a straight one and was bowled. An over later the skipper declared with Nigel Keess on 81 not out.

This declaration took the  tea lady by surprise but as the tea emerged in batches what a good tea it was. However the slight delay with the tea and the uncontrolled greed of the Nomads resulted in a prolonged intermission reducing significantly the available overs for Nomads to bowl.

Debutant Andy Sheldon quickly disposed of opener Willey but opener Marsh hung around with Morgan to add 37 before Sunny Fernando bowled Morgan, 43--2.  Nine runs later Sheldon and Fernado both struck again leaving Billericay 52-4. The obdurate Foley took root and with Garrett added 38 runs before Nigel Keess ran out Garrett.Paul Fielding then bowled Randall for 2 and at 82-6 with 12 overs to go Nomads smelt victory.

However the ancient Southwell dug in and with  Foley added  46 more runs as Keess and Gregory were introduced to the attack.  Eventually the returning Sheldon trapped Foley lbw for 43. Southwell unfazed by Sheldon and Wakefield  struck some boundaries and with Sandeman batted until the close reaching 140-7 off 43 overs.

Doubtless Jack Hyams would have been proud of his former Billericay Veterans team mates batting out for a draw and highly critical of the Nomads skipper for declaring so late!

After the match Nomads lingered long wiith the opposition over several pints as reminiscences of Jack and his redoubtable antics were told and retold.
