Nomads short of bowling and outgunned
We suffered a lot of drop outs for this game and late ones and one player failed to make it all. This left short of bowling and having one the toss with only possible decision so we batted. We picked up a couple of local players and received an extra fielder after tea. Several batsmen seemed to be building an innings only to fail to surge onto a big one. Despite the wet and lush outfield a good number of boundaries were scored but the momentum was sluggish surprisingly even Shahzeb got bogged down 31 from 60 balls finding the slow bowling of Hall puzzling.
At 20 overs we had progressed to a mere 77. The innings changed gear with John Olive and guest Bodiani who added almost 70 for the fifth wicket. John Olive was a majestic presence at the crease hitting 11 fours and 2 sixes and wrecking Hall's bowling figures and savaging the young Oz from Stanmore CC. We declared after 40 overs to enjoy an excellent tea. The declaration had been made on the basis that john olive would be running in full tilt and bowling fast but when we went out to field he informed the skipper that midweek he bowled slow to spare the strain on his back! Had we had this knowledge earlier we would have batted a few more overs to good effect.
In the event Rohan Sur bowled nicely to take three top order wickets leaving Wembley on 43-3. Cullen started hesistantly and on another day he may well have been caught early in his innings but then he and Jawad Azar took the game away from Nomads adding 112 for the next wicket. The wet outfield and drizzle before tea had caused the one ball used in the game to change shape and become sodden thus rendering Rohan's fingers irrelevant. Increasingly poor deliveries crept in and were punished.
Nutan Shah was introduced and John Olive changed ends claiming two wickets,165-6. With nine fielders and three of those veterans and slow movers Nomads proved unable to quench the flow of runs as Cullen smacked the bowling far and wide to reach the target at a gallop and with many an over to spare, ten in fact. Cullen reached his century with the winning hit. Wembley had won with some ease by five wickets. Several Nomads drank with Wembley for some hours despite the football from foreign parts and some enquired where last year's quick bowler was.
"In a debtors' prison no doubt" remarked Nomads skipper who had come to watch the fun.
