Kandampully ninety sets up Nomads win

The Nomads made their annual trip to the Kent/ London border to provide opposition to Beckenham CC during their cricket week. The home side are having a fine season, with their 1XI topping the Kent Premier League, and Nomads captain Vic Kandampully had assembled a strong side accordingly.

With the forecast ominous, journeys to the ground were made with some trepidation, and indeed rain was falling steadily at the scheduled start time of 11.30am. An early lunch was taken at 12.45pm, and while players and spectators tucked into a wonderful curry, the skies began to clear, and thanks to sympathetic groundstaff and a quick-draining ground, cricket was able to commence at 2pm in milky sunshine, with captains agreeing upon a 35-over match.

Australian Alex Dillon & Sanjay Beri opened for the Nomads, and while Dillon was watchful against the dangerous looking Khan, Beri found the bowling of MacVicar to his liking, taking 12 from his first over. His stay proved to be brief however, as Khan found his outside edge to have him caught at slip.

Dillon was joined by the left-handed Luxembourgian Tim Barker, and the two continued to find runs hard to come by against Khan, while keeping the board ticking over from the other end. The pair almost managed to see off Khan’s 7 over spell, before he trapped Dillon in front for 16 with one that nipped back, bringing wicket-keeper Josh Blake to the wicket.

His stay with Barker was a short one, as the number 3 perished to the medium pace of Engel, caught at mid-on. Vic Kandampully strode to the wicket to join ex-Sutton teammate Blake, and the two immediately increased the run rate against some friendlier bowling, finding the short square boundaries with increasing regularity.

Blake was first to bring up his half century but his captain was not far behind, and the two of them took their partnership to over 100 before Blake could only find mid-on attempting to strike another boundary, with only 3 overs remaining. Steve Dummer came and went quickly, but this didn’t stop the innings concluding in a flurry of boundaries, as Kandampully finished unbeaten on 91, and Tom Marshall was stumped off the final ball of the innings attempting a maximum. The Nomads closed on a very competitive 221-6 from their allotted overs.

After an excellent tea, Beckenham came out to commence their reply. The same Khan who had probed with the new ball came out to open their innings, and made his intentions clear by twice lofting pitched up deliveries from Marshall to the boundary. However he perished for just 9, inside edging fellow opening bowler Walker onto his stumps attempting another ambitious aerial stroke.

His partner Evans was starting to move through the gears and beginning to strike boundaries around the wicket, but his innings was also brought to an end by Walker who induced an edge, neatly taken by Joe Ireland at slip. Ireland himself was soon into the attack, along with Sam Blake.

Both kept run scoring to a minimum initially, as Beckenham’s 3&4 struggled for fluency, but slowly they found their timing, leading the home side to 120-2. However the required run rate was continuing to rise, and the inevitable happened when Purwar ran past a delivery from Butcher, with J Blake completing a simple stumping. Tom Marshall returned and was quickly rewarded with the wicket of Edie, smartly caught at long off by S Blake, and with this went the home side’s faint hopes of triumph.

The remaining overs were played out in increasingly dark conditions, but there remained time for S Blake to take his maiden Nomads wicket, bowling Beckenham’s number 6 with an in ducker, and for Engel to bring up his half-century, before the end came with the Nomads winning by a margin of 45 runs.

Nomad representation in the busy Beckenham bar continued late into the evening, and our thanks goes to the home side for their understanding in challenging weather conditions and for their fine hospitality.
