Nomads bowling inadequate so Gypsies canter home

Nomads no match for GypsiesThis is the first match between Nomads and Gypsies and the home side proved to be worthy victors on the day.Nomads won the toss and batted and were soon in trouble losing Eral Anderson for a duck to veteran seamer Belfield and then Jeremy Lascelles was run out. Giles Climent and Stuart Reeve (from Moseley CC) sought to rebuild the innings but in doing so the innings momentum was sluggish so that at lunch Nomads were 86-2 off 30 overs.

A Glos Gypsy lunch is a grand affair and speeches were made and a considerable quantity of port consumed.

After the lunch Giles Climent was soon out to be followed by Jemile Darraji of whom much more was anticipated. The innings accelerated with a stand between the two Stuart Reeves and then a swashbuckling cameo from Gautom Menon. This enabled Nomads skipper Kevin Smith to declare with a respectable if inadequate total.

Nomads opened their bowling with the seasoned and brisk Jemile Darraji and the veteran Tony Webb slow medium but full of guile and swing. However Gypsies openers survived and pierced the rather immobile, in the main, Nomads filding. It was the slow flighted spin of Ross Ormiston who took the first wicket deceiving Sadler who was caught and bowled. The second wicket fell to the returning Webb but at 147 with Gypsies well en route to victory and opener Carson to his century.

Nomads late trump cards may have been Stu Reeve and Gautom Menon on another day but both struggled with line and length as well as filling the extras column. Menon was responsible for the wicket of centurion Carson who hit a full toss to skipper Kevin Smith at long on, the catcher turning and bowing to accept the applause of the spectators.

The skipper brought back Jemile but he tried too hard bowling short and was punished by both Walsh and Richardson who secured a win for Gypsies with a couple of overs to spare.

Nomads' total was way short but with some more disciplined bowling and a little more athleticism in the field Gypsies task would have been much more difficult.

Nomads quaffed late in the clubhouse thanks to the generosity of the Stowell Park groundsman before setting forth to various parts of the kingdom and so home.

Many thanks to Gypsies for their hospitality. It is very apposite that Nomads and Gypsies should play against each other and long may the matches continue.
