Veteran Nomads no match for M & B
Four youngsters pulled out and their replacements were ancient. One was lame before the game and pulled up lame after bowling his first ball. The home side won the toss and batted. Our one younger member of which much was hoped for in the field felt his recent hernia operation at the first sharp fielding stopand nursed himself carefully thereafter.
The game was notable for two contrasting opening stands and a hat trick as well the heroic running up and down the mid wicket boundary by the OAPRanjit Latchman who also took a great diving catch.
Maidenhead opened with two teenagers who made 28 between them against us two years previously. King should have been caught and bowled when barely on ten and both of them gave us the opportunity of running one or other of them out on three occassions when stranded in mid wicket. Despite the age of the fielders involved an accurate gentle under arm would have achieved the desired result. Instead the throws went high and wide.Bowlingwas also dropped off a steepler at mid off in mid innings.
Prospering on our generosity in the field these two added 185 for the first wicket and the rest added 115 by the close, after 40 overs.
Ranjit and Peerless began brightly but at 49 Ranjit pulled to legyet the ball failed to bounce much and he was bowled. The rest added 127 the bulk of which was from CharlesPeerless and Andy Smith. However Peerless out on 95 for 36 precipitated a hat trick for a very pleased Qureshi who was rewarded by being taken off.
Nomads reached 175 all out in the 37th over, a long way behind.
However Nomads lingered long once the real ale was located and reminded the senior members of the opposition of the Nomads team pedigree. One had played first class cricket, another an international one dayer, two had played Minor County cricket and two had played Cricketer Cup cricket. Such theoretical prowess debilitated by age counted for nought on the day, one of the hottest all summer.
