Understrength Highgate no match for Nomads
Our matches with Highgate have usually been good competitive matches and the location has proved popular with Nomads members. As a result Nomads strive to bring a long a decent eleven which is pretty easy to do. However on this occassion Highgate'a admin seemed have gone a trifle awhol. We arrived to find a mass of children enjoying themselves under the tutelage of the Groundsman/Coach who apologised for not putting the covers on the night before. It had rained most of the night and the pitch was thus damp. As the start time approached and Nomads were all present it became apparent that Highgate were short. To help out Nomads Damon Wilson rolled the pitch.Nomads won the toss and despite the damp pitch elected to bat sensing that Highgate were weaker than usuall. Highgate's skipper Nick Shelly-Smith who has played for Nomads informed us that some of his players were late but he would use some of the youngsters present to field as substitutes. In fact these subs stayed the course and batted.
Nomads opened with Sanjay Beri and Alex Dillon. Sanjay swung merrily from the start hitting a lot of sixes while Alex dug in suspicious of the damp pitch. Eventually Alex changed gear and hit a couple of sixes before uncharacteristicaly driving straight to deep long off. Nomads were 126-1 off 18 overs. Damon Wilson joined Sanjay who quickly reached his 100 and was retired,143-2. Victor Kandampully joined Damon and these two swiftly added a further 126 runs off 14 overs before the innings was declared early at 269 off 33 overs.
After an excellent tea Nomads opened up with Alex Foulds, seam and Div Mishra, brisk spin. Wickets soon began to tumble as the youngsters failed to cope with Foulds who took three wickets and Mishra one. Jake Wilson and Abbas Khati resisted for a short while but five wickets fell for two runs scored as Ben Butcher took four wickets for three runs. Owen Marshall finished off the innings first removing top scorer Abbas Khati and then number 11 Sarto. Highgate had scored a mere 56 runs and Nomads had won by 213 runs. A serious mismatch.
Neverthless Nomads lingered at the clubhouse celebrating victory and Sanjay's ton before repairing to a local hostelry with Match Manager Andy Collins.
