Damon Wilson century takes Nomads to substantial victory

Nomads ran out winners by 7 wickets vs Highgate CC after a thoroughly professional performance. Concerned over the “seniority” of his side in the field Brockton inserted Highgate upon winning the toss and then got off to the perfect start with the skipper taking three quick wickets with the new ball, including the opener who had scored a hundred vs Nomads for Montenotte earlier on in the season. Dom Elliott’s left arm spin and Ashwin Rattan continued the good work bowling accurately on the small playing surface.

Elliott was rewarded with a brace of wickets, including the wicket of the Highgate captain, bowled by an absolute beauty. Rattan went wicketless but bowled a tight line and length and after 30 overs the home side were stuttering. Debutant Joshi (former 1st class cricketer from the West Indies) bowled some tidy off-spin, picking up their Aussie batsman who had just passed 50, bowled through the gate. Iggy Chowdhury got a bit of a lambasting and young James Bridge picked up two wickets at the end of the innings but was also treated with some long handle. Matt Durrant impressed taking 3 catches in the outfield and the innings closed with keeper Damon Wilson throwing down the stumps for a direct hit run out. Highgate closing on 240-9 dec, a below par total on such a small ground and fast outfield.

After the usual Thai tea Wakefield and Kandampully opened up, but alas Wakfield was taken at cover after toeing a cut shot to point for just a solitary single. Kandampully was finding the bowling to his liking dispatching the pale faced Highgate seamer, known as “The Taker” as in Under-Taker by the home side, for consecutive boundaries. In partnership with Wilson the pair took the stuffing out of Highgate’s bowling attack.

The skipper turned to himself, and a promising young offie, but to no avail, the Nomads pair soldiered on in the sweltering heat in a partnership of epic proportions. Kandampully (76) was spectacularly caught at backward-point attempting yet another forceful cut shot for 4, and James Bridge joined Wilson. The pair took the Nomads to the very brink of victory when Bridge was caught behind, however this did not deter Wilson as he back cut elegantly to bring up a richly deserved hundred and taking Nomads to victory by 7 wickets with just over 7 overs of the 20 remaining. Nomads had chased down a total of nearly 250 in just over 30 overs, putting into perspective what a small and fast scoring ground Highgate CC is.

After the game many of the side lingered long in the evening sunshine sampling ale and Thai food. Non-playing match manager Andy Collins was a very thirsty & generous spectator during the course of the afternoon. Our thanks also to Nick Stevenson for umpiring during the day.
