Gordon applies the 'coup de grace' after fifties from Hopkinson and Penford.

Both sides had struggled to maintain a side of eleven players but Wembley did better on the day. They had ten and we a mere eight so Charlie Meyer gave us one and we were nine players each. It was then agreed that all out meant all nine batsmen out. Charlie considered Wembley's batting was a bit fragile so we were invited to bat on what turned out to be dodgy strip helpful to seam bowling. In fact we were on the second square because of an underground water burst which was damaging the main Ground.

As a result of some decent bowling by Wembley's opening bowlers and then Zamanit looked as if it would be Nomads who would be shot out for next to nought. Lascelles was run out for a duck thanks to a yes/no from Gordon. Gordon was caught down the leg side. Andy Smith was well caught off a steepling shot and Hirani went for a duck as well, four of the top six had fallen for the princely total of 11 between them. Luckily at the other end Zimbabwean debutant Gerry Penford hit a sparkling 57 off 50 balls. However we were still 79-5.

Charlie Meyers now did a 'Crombie' as it is called in Nomads parlance and Ted Hopkinson plundered this friendly bowling for 66 off 56 balls. He was partnered by David MacVicar who struggled to find the middle of his bat yet these two put on 94 for sixth wicket. As a result Nomads were able to declare after 41 overs on a respectable 185-8. Thatwe persisted that long was due the presence in the Wembley team of young tyro Ian Salter who hit 25 centuries the previous season.

After a good tea, Gordon and MacVicar opened the bowling. MacVicar was not quite his usual self which we put down to the stress of walking to the clubfrom North Wembley tube station and so he was replaced by the spin of Andy Smith. At the other Johnno Gordon steadily took wickets including importantly Ian Salter by way of a caught and bowled off a mishit full toss.

Although we did have Gerry Penford,Ted Hopkinson and Mike Plowright to bowl it seemed only reasonable to see if Johnno could take all nine. He seemed on for it until the non striker called for a bye believing the ball had run some distance behind the errant wicket keeper. It had not. So Hirani ran back turned and hit the stumps with a gentle under arm throw.! The look of horror on Johnno's face will long be remembered. Nomads had won by 118 runs. "Have not you got anyone else to bowl" complained Charlie. Well we had, the more than competant Penford and Hopkinson as well veteran Mike Plowright.

A long session resulted thereafter at the bar.

Johnno Gordon's figures are the best by a Nomads bowler since Roger Kinsella took 8-17 in 1991 against Hampshire Mercenaries. see Honours Board Bowling

the reward for his eightfer (8-22) we shall never know !
