This match was a curiosity in that Nomads skipper failed to bowl his best bowler Michael Thewlis unaware that he would not be playing the next day. Saumur despite losing few wickets were far behind the clock.At 25 overs they had scored 117.
Yet Nial Thorburn-Muirhead and Andy German then hit 76 off the next 10.4 overs to win with a six off skipper Blumberg with some eight balls remaining. Given that we had lent Martin Thewlis to Saumur we could but enjoy the occassion.
After the match both teams enjoyed a splendid dinner at a restaurant of Krishna Lester's choice and Kelvin Sutherland wondered aloud what Brinde could see in Simon Collins who had been rechristened 'Terry Thomas' by the Polygon element.

Saumur were strengthend by some players from Thoiry who would be playing the next day for France West Region against MCC.Saumur won the toass and batted. Martin Thewlis took three wickets while Mark Surridge bowled a tidy spell at the other end. Simon Barter had hit 68 before being caught off Blumberg. The rapid Robinson accounted for a couple of wickets towards the close. Earlier Julian Howe was most miffed to be adjudged caught behind.
Nomads lost Kelvin Sutherland cheaply but Martin Thewlis and Thomas added 63 before Thomas was bowled by Burns. Burns picked up two more wickets including Thewlis for 55 but the mighty striking Robinson with Surridge as partner chased down the tagert with four overs to spare.
After the match both teams enjoyed a sumptuous buffer dinner at the Vineyard managed by Krishna Lester together with MCC Touring party who were to play at Saumur next day. Much to Nomads appreciation MCC were to pick up the tab for the evening.
The MCC skipper manager invited the Nomads to have a beer with them at a bar by the riverside later. Nomads skipper suggested Armangnac might be more appropriate to which the Scotsman agreed at once resulting in much Armagnac passing Nomads and MCC lips that night .
On the Monday when MCC were playing France West a French PE teacher arrived with a load of French children since it was a national holiday for the purpose of keeping them occupied all day. Being a PE teacher she was curious about the cricket match and asked many questions about the game and then whether there was a version for her bunch of kids. Yes came the chorused reply .Kwik Kricket and we have some equipment.
As we had several Cricketers who were French speaking in no time at all all these young French children wer taught and then playing 'pairs' Kwik Kricket and this went for hours. As the afternoon passed eventually the Teacher said she had to take the younger children home but would we keep an eye some older ones who wished to continue.
We obliged. However when the match was over and it came time to pack up and depart for up our hotels before dinner the young French cricketers were mortified. They wished to persist until darkness.
Krishna Lester in charge of Saumur CC had taken the PE teacher's contact details and sensed a potential break through for cricket with the town's children. Alas the teacher was transferred shortly afterwards to a school many 100s of kilometers away. Yet this experience was indicative of how universal is Kwik Kricket as a Primary School age sporting activity.
If only ICC had the wisdom and vision to lobby for it worldwide with educational authorities. Presumably they don't since there is no quick financial return. Sad !
