A dropped catch and a load of byes deny Nomads dramatic victory

The Merrow pitch has been very dusty on previous Nomads visits with former skipper Dan Taylor turning the ball sideways. In 2012 we failed to make 100 and that included a last wicket stand of 20. In 2012 two skillful and patient innings from Fahad Rajah and John Olive laid the basis for a big total. Last year a patient century from Sam Holdsworth took us to a useful total and time to bowl out Merrow. This year Merrow CC had suffered a water supply problem so the square despite heavy recent rain was even drier than usuall. Nomads won the toss and batted. This side on paper was a powerful batting line up. Merrow had a few guests, their New Zealand skipper and a lot of colts whose batting was not yet their forte.

Vib Yadav and Mike Blake opened against the seam of Cooley and Saints. Both medium paced seamers they achieved serious movement off the seam as well as bowling some balls that stopped and popped while others kept low. Cooley did dropped short however several times and was punished by Yadav. The score had reched 42 when Cooley was replaced by Turnbull-Cooke, a part time banama left armer round the wicket bowler, and one such ball did for Yadav. lock, stock and barrell. At the same score next over Mike Blake succumbed to tall dibby dobby seamer Stiff and Christian Munoz drove early and gently to short cover, 52-3.

Wickets then fell steadily as Nnomads batsmen reached double figures, even twenty, before succumbing to the eccentricities of the pitch and some good catching. At lunch Nomads were a precarious 107-6,off 30 overs.

After lunch young Jamie Roper from Spain batted well but losing partners Omer Ayaz and Raymond Lashwayo to unnecessarily injudicious shots. Having hit a big six himself Jamie too miscued,172-9,45.4 overs. Chris Page and Peter Sumner stretched the innings to the 49th over when Peter was caught. Nomads had posted a mere 177 runs.

It was important for Nomads to take early wickets. Nomads skipper opted to open with Omer Ayaz and Jamie Roper rather than Jonathan Ssebanja and Vib Yadav. This decision was rewarded early on as Omer removed opener Henderson in the 6th over. However the other opener Cooley from Hastings and St Leonards CC then took a liking to Roper's short balls hitting a couple of sixes right out of the ground over fine leg. Vib Yadav was introduced but bowling leg breaks for a couple of overs yet it was the introduction of wily old Chris Page that changed the innings. He had Cooley caught by Ssebanja for 47 and then trapped Newman lbw just before tea, 89-3off 14 overs.

With such a flying start Merrow were in pole position with their New Zealand skipper batting well and patiently. Nomads quest was to keep him off strike and remove the rest. Marra and Watts added 49 before Page had him also caught Ssebana for 11,138-4,27.3 overs.

Peter Sumner briefly introduced from the other end caught and bowled Corning for 1,140-5,28.4 overs.

Chris Page took two more wickets so Merrow had sunk to 147-7. Marra now batted intelligently, retaining the strike, as some 27 runs were added. Ssebanja recalled to replaced the miserly Sumner had a torrid second over which Marra smashed for 13 while Raymond behind the stumps failed to stop three awkwardly bouncing deliveries from Ssebanja which went for boundary byes. The target was now well in sight.

Then Page deceived Marra on 82 and Peter Sumner took a good diving catch at mid on. At the same score Ayaz at silly mid off took a fine one handed catch to remove number 10.

Number 11 Stiff now joined Turnbull-Cooke who had hit a boundary four in the 36th over. These two swung and missed and miscued as the score crept closer then, with two required to win, Stiff's eyes lit up and he swung to cow corner. Jonathan Ssebanja, our safest catcher, ran round from long on and seemed fleetingly to take the catch only to stumble and let it go. Ugh! The scores were level. Turnbull-Cook played and missed then swung airily and bottom edged to fine leg to make the winning run.

Phew!

Chris Page finished on 7 -37 off 14 overs, a fine spell indeed.

Over the years there have been a number of remarkable matches between Merrow and Nomads not least in 2001 after which 'Grumpy' Croomers sent in his account. In those days before the advent of King Grumpy Page it was Croomers who held that title.....read on
