Churcher ton in vain as rain is the winner

Our fixtures with Cheshunt Thursday come via Bob Cairns and Jack Hyams who play regularly for them but so far we have been plagued by rotten weather or an inability to raise a full side.

This time it drizzled most of the time, sometimes heavily and sometimes almost not at all, but at the insistence of the opposition skipper we agreed to start playing what was supposed to be a 30 over match. Ben Churcher, an Australian teacher, making his debut hit a fine century and Keith Alexander and Chris Ledger chipped in with useful contributions so that we finished on 227-3.

After tea the drizzle became heavier but during the few overs we bowled first Lamb at slip and then Alexander, the wicket keeper, took screaming catches of a brisk Ben Churcher. Then the rain became worse and much to the relief of a sodden umpire we left the field for the hot showers.

There was some discussion as to whether a result could be gleaned from a run rate comparison but that had not been agreed before the match which was thus abandoned with no result.

There was a test match on the TV and the bar was open for the bowlers so that many wondered why we left the dry clubhouse for the deluge outside except of course Ben Churcher.Opposition skipper Roger Gravett said it was to give us an appetite for tea!
