Nomads win with ease at Warborough & Shillingford
Nomads notched up another win, 27th of thecampaign at the pretty Oxfordshire setting of Warborough &Shillingford. Under blue skies and warm(well warm for mid-September) weather the Nomads inserted the home side whostated they had a medium-strong to strong XI. Nomads lacked a full seam attack, with only the reliable Mike Robbins totake the burden of the new ball and were reliant on the thrifty purveyors ofspin in Marshall, Mishra and Page. However with a strong batting line upbolstered by debutant Richard Chalk from the Frogs chasing seemed to be themost sensible option.
Robbins and Marshall took the new cherry and in the next 60minutes Nomads bowled 25 overs (yes 25!) and the home side crawled to 32-3. Robbins was bowling an immaculate line andlength and Marshall as miserly as ever. Only the no 4 (wicket keeper) looked tomove his feet or play with any sense of purpose, but this was to be hisdownfall as he yorked himself off Marshall and was clean bowled. I it was not until the introduction ofprofessor Page that the first boundary was hit. Page went wicketless and wasoff colour after a long spell at The Royal Household the previous day and he was quickly replaced by Div Mishra.
Mishra was quickly into his stride, turning the ballprodigiously and claimed and impressive 5 wicket haul, two bowled with absolutecrackerjack deliveries. At the other endNigel Keess lured the W&S skipper into an uncharacteristic hoik to leg andhe was stumped as he advanced out of his crease when having to bat with theyoung tail. Interestingly the W&Sno11 was the only player to try and “get on wiv it”, as Page would and did say.He smoked the returning Robbins for a mighty 6 before being caught by Mishrarunning in from cover. W&S bundledout for 79 in 48 agonising overs. Nomads had bowled these in just 2hrs and 15minutes.
A delicious tea awaited the sides, sitting outside in thepleasant sunshine, scones and jam all round !
Nomads opted to go for the jugular, the established pair ofskipper Brockton and in-form Farrell opened the innings for the Nomads and injust 12 overs the meagre total had been overhauled for the loss of no wicket.Farrell in a pugnacious mood, plundering several boundaries and three mighty 6’sto get to a quick 51 not out. Brockton, happy to play 2nd fiddle supportedhis partner in the successful run chase. Nomads winners for the 2nd time this season by the margin of 10 wickets.
An early finish meant a few cold ones back in the thatchedroofed Six Bells hostelry, literally a stones-throw from the Warborough and Shillingford ground. We look forward to returning to the pretty setting nextseason, and enjoying perhaps a more competitive contest.
Nomads played Warborough and Shillingford for many years, 1983 to 1999.
