Nomads prevail in shortened match

On a beautiful summer's afternoon of which there have been far too few in 2008 a Nomads X beat a Watford X by 7 wickets in a match reduced to 35/35 overs to allow the wet pitch to dry.

Watford batted first and were soon in trouble to the in swing of  young Woody and the away swing of veteran Croomers so that four batsmen fell for a mere 36 runs.

The powerful hitting Sampat revived the innings with assistance from   Skipper Knox until bowled by Sri Lankan Pathirathana for 44 having added 52. Knox and Grange added a further 35 whereupon Leachman had Grange caught by Woody at deep gully. Next over Azaam induced a miscued pull from Knox to give a spectacular one handed catch from Riaz,123-7 and the tail fell likewise to the 'demon' Azaam thus depriving the President of a bowl.

Habib and Riaz opened only for the former to fall for a single and then Norman Dugdale who had flown from Franfurt to play in this game played on so Nomads were 5-2!

Pathirathna now joined Riaz and these two added 89 before G Hazarika induced an error from Riaz on 46. woody now joined Pathirathna and these two hit off the remaining runs to bring vitory  with 6.3 overs remaining.

Much credit must go to Watford for enabling this match to take place and the contribution of Gulfaz Riaz who scored a century for us in this match last year for generously providing us with players and some batsmen. In fact arguably they beat themselves!

The tea was very good too.

It was a great pity on such a lovely afternoon that so few regular Nomads were able to make themselves available.

Asif Padhani a regular tourist with Nomads in Spain in recent years came along to watch the latter overs of the game.

Previous Matches
2007 Watford Town won by 2 wickets despite Chris Page 6-43
2006 Nomads lost by 6 runs with Paul Wakefield on 94 too tired to hit the last ball for six!
