All round Nomads too good for Follies in rain reduced encounter

Nomads defeated Follies Farm by the margin of 22 runs in a game of cricket that at one point didnt look like it would take place at all. Blue skies in the morning turned to dark and drizzle bathed the pretty ground in Chiddingfold. A super effort by the home team marshaled by David Leng resulted in covers being taken off and a start time of 3pm and a 35 over a side game was agreed.

Nomads won the toss and elected to bat, runs on the board always an important factor in a rain reduced game. Steele and Lane opened for the visitors and Nomads lost Steele early in the piece, but Lane and Andy Stokes looked in fine form and progressed the score to 72 without further alarm before Lane toe-ended a cut shot and was and was caught by Bob Cryer off the bowling of Griffiths for a well crafted 36.

This brought Robbie Blackburn to the crease, promoted up the order to give the inning some much needed impetus. That he did and he and Stokes (45) added almost 60 in double quick time. Blackburn took a liking to the bowling of Hall who was dispatched for 32 in 2 overs, including 3 enormous 6's.

Unfortunately both cricketers were dismissed in relatively quick succession and the innings stuttered somewhat with Dixon, Smith and Wahi all dismissed cheaply. Skipper Brockton nurdling his way to 19 not out and Nomads ending on a credible 189-7 from their allotted 35 overs.

The usual excellent Follies tea was enjoyed by all, and Follies started well despite losing Cryer to a good catch from keeper Wahi standing up to wily veteran seamer Oliver Croom-Johnson. Spencer and Griffiths were batting with purpose and with the score 75-1 the match was anyones at this point.

Enter Robbie Blackburn who dismissed both players in the same over, one courtesy of a well snaffled catch from Andy Stokes. The game had swung Nomads way and Brockton took the prize scalp of Follies legend David Leng, nipping one back to clean bowl the dangerous batsman for just 7. Despite a distinctly average spell from David Steele from this point on Nomads were always ahead of the game and Ross Ormiston picked up a wicket for his efforts.
In the end, despite the Follies captain Tebbitt throwing the proverbial kitchen sink at a few deliveries and failing to make connection with the ball the Nomads ran out winners by 22 runs in a well played competitive match.

With the sun now out the players and supporters socialised over a few drinks in the pavilion, unfortunately in the knowledge that the Follies Farm property and estate was up for sale and a fixture in 2016 may well be in the lap of the gods.

Our thanks to David Leng, all of the Follies Farm players for their hospitality over the years and to Angelo Enonomou our generous host at Follies Farm Old Spots CC. Until 2016 ?
