Phil Drake of EHCC writes

An excellently competitive game of Sunday cricket.

It was a bright sunny day at East Horsley, but the stars were still shining at the club. Upon arrival, none other than Henry Olonga and David Folb, the founder of Lashings CC, were present. The sight of a former test-player was slightly unnerving, and the decision to describe last year's match as a 'boring, boring draw' seemed a less good decision. The relieved sigh was audible when we found out that Olonga wasn't playing, but even so the Nomads brought a side packed with quality cricketers.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, EHCC looked to pile on the runs. Against some miserly tight off-spin, and some brisk pace from Rana, Tosh and Brown formed a platform for Symonds-Baig to achieve 57 on debut, an assured and organised innings. P Drake did his best Richardson impression, collecting 47*, in which there were more singles than a Top 40 chart.

With tight bowling, and excellent wicket-keeping the Nomads made run-scoring difficult for the young EHCC, who eventually finished on 210 declared after 45 overs. The pitch, assisting the seam bowler with the generous grass coverage, and offering a little in terms of bounce with the new ball, probably deserved a score closer to 225.

The Nomads' innings began, with EHCC wondering whether they had enough bowling. A Drake bowled well to take 2 early wickets, particularly against one of their openers who has previously scored good centuries against us. After 7 overs or so, the Nomads were 30-3, and whilst they continued to pick up runs probably too easily, the standard of batting was good and they were always up with the rate.

Wickets continued to fall.... players continued to threaten to take the game away from us, and the game was set up for a great finish. However, with 4 overs to go EHCC needed to take one wicket for the victory, but some resolute lower-order batting assured the Nomads a draw, a more than fair result on the day, given the way in which the Nomads played - continuously threatening to snatch the game with a few lusty blows.

We shall look forward to next year, though who knows which of Lashings' stars will turn up next year? Brian Lara? Shane Warne? Phil Tufnell?    (Probably just G Charlton Lamb & Jack Hyam adds Nomads webmaster)

An excellent game, in excellent conditions. Well played all.

And for the Webmaster's Report

East Horsley were mighty worried by the arrival of Henry Olonga at the start of this match and equally relieved to discover he was 12th man and official photographer for the day. Their innings set off at some pace but then lost momentum as Joe Ireland’s left arm spin tightened the screw so much so that they declared on 214 after 45 overs, a generous declaration. Nomads suffered a top order collapse but then steadily rebuilt the innings with several useful mid and low order contributions so that 23 were required off the last two overs. The loss of the 9th wicket then saw Nomads bat out the remaining 10 balls for a draw. Isabel Duncan made her debut for Nomads in this game taking 1-34 off 6 overs and scoring 5 not out
