The Nomads juggernaut continues

Nomads reclaimed the Michael Blumberg Tankard in fine styleat the idyllic setting of Sherfield on Loddon on Sunday. Under gorgeous blueskies and lovely warm weather Sherfield skipper (and Nomads member) SteveDummer won the toss and elected to bat.

Some 40 odd overs later Sherfield had been bundled out for108 with the Nomads bowlers disciplined in line and length and the fieldersmiserly.  Sajjad Shawl will rightly takethe plaudits with a 4 wicket haul in an unnerving opening spell. Sajjad bowledwith superb rhythm, hitting the seam on a regular basis and bowling with goodpace.  Kie Farrell took two impressivecatches at 2nd slip and Saurabh Wahi was tidy behind the stumps onhis return to the XI.

Sajjad’s spell contained the wickets of Nomad Jon Gibson andhe was well supported by Suraj Vithlani who dismissed the burly Bromleycricketer Rob Dummer who has been a thorn in Nomads side in recent years with acouple of eye catching performances.

The change bowlers also did not disappoint and only Rob andSteve Dummer batted with any semblance of security in the middle part of theinnings.  Chris Page and Andy Marshallbowled accurately despite the former getting some Dummer long handle, andskipper Brockton supplied the coup de grasse by clean bowling the Sherfieldskipper as he looked to up the rate. This effectively ended the Sherfieldresistance & part time off-spinner Jack Massey claimed his first Nomadswicket, Pretzel chipping tamely to square leg where Andy Marshall made nomistake.  This ended the Sherfieldinnings.

Tea was simply spectacular, and the Nomads lingered in thewarm sunshine enjoying the wonderful spread (and cold beer). Perhaps it was thelatter that buoyed Jack Massey to launch a savage assault on the Sherfieldbowlers.  After the early dismissal of formerHampshire junior Andy Stokes, who chipped tamely to square leg in the firstover, it was one way traffic.

An erratic Pretzel was dispatched by Massey as he andFarrell knocked off the small target in double quick time.  Massey raced to 50 and finished the game infine style with a massive blow over long on to end on 63 from just 29 balls.Farrell 32* supported well at the other end and Nomads winners by the margin of9 wickets.

Due to the early finish the players enjoyed a cold thirstquencher in the sun at the pretty village ground before retiring for moreliquid libation and banter with the friendly opposition at the near-by FourHorseshoes.

Our thanks to Steve Dummer for all his work leading up tothe game and Grant Smith & his lovely wife for a spectacular and delicious tea.We look forward to contesting for the Michael Blumberg tankard in 2019.
