Virgin XI/Nomads suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of a young, but very well-drilled Holmesdale team. It was as abject a batting performance as can be remembered in Virgin's history - this despite putting out a team with a reasonably strong batting line-up. Bowled out for 70 in 24.3 overs, with only one player, Tom Lascelles, reaching double figures, tells the story. Even though Holmesdales's captain described it as their best bowling and fielding performance of the season, the steady stream of wickets was frankly inexcusable.
To rub salt into the wound, Holmesdale knocked off the runs in 10.1 overs for the loss of one wicket, to recorcc d a a 9 wicket victory in the last over before tea.
In that Nomads was defeated by Eton Ramblers on the same day this was not an outstanding Sunday for the club.
Holmesdale - June 26th 2005 (Twenty/20 match)
As a result of the early conclusion to the first match, it was agreed between the captains to stage a Twenty/20 contest. This was a type of cricket that the youthful Holmesdale team had some experience in (being involved in a Twenty/20 league), and the game was played in a fully competetive spirit. Although Holmesdale got off to a flying start, a vastly improved bowling and fielding performance by VCC pegged them back, Ben Bodie with 2-19 and Colin Sargent with 4-21 being the pick of the bowlers. Holmesdale's eventual total of 143-6, whilst being challenging, fell short of what they at one stage threatened.
An extraordinary first over, which saw Andy Smith hitting a 7 (quick single, resulting in 2 overthrows, followed by a wild return from the deep which went for a further 4 overthrows) set the tone. Colin Sargent and Richard Woolhouse both seemed in fine touch before getting themselves out unnecessarily. A mid innings mini-wobble was settled by a calm, authoritative innings from Jeremy Lascelles, whose 30* saw Virgin home by 4 wickets with 10 balls to spare, at least salvaging some pride from the afternoon's cricket
