A mismatch on a rare dry midsummer Sunday
Nomads ran out winners by 8 wickets in a forgettable contest at Winchmore Hill CC on Sunday. This was a Conference fixture brokered by Bill Johnson and Ross Ormison to chiefly allow their great friend Steve Robertson (formerly of Central Districts in NZ) to get in a game of cricket while in the UK. So the Nomads had three former 1st class cricketers as well as several former 1st XI players. Surprisingly having won the toss Winchmore Hill elected to bat despite being advised of the strength of the Nomads XI.
At 27-5 after 17 overs the game as a contest was over. Nomads had 3 slips for the vast majority of the innings as well as two other men on the drive, but still the runs did not come. Thanks almost entirely to Sobers, the tall WHCC no7 and grandson of Sir Gary Sobers the home side posted 130 and assisted by Nomads dropping eight catches, some by the most unlikely of suspects.
However at least they had reached a total over 100. Sajjad Shawl was by far the pick of the Nomads bowlers bowling his 8 overs for just 7 runs and taking 2 wickets.
Nomads lost the debutant opener early but Ireland and Robertson forged a good partnership to practically see the visitors home. Robertson was well caught on the deep midwicket boundary for 18 and Saurabh Wahi accompanied Ireland to his 50 and the match with 20 overs remaining.
An early finished resulted in many of the Nomads lingering long in the WHCC bar, Michael Blumberg and Chris “The Professor” Page in good form, and plenty of banter from Bonker Bill Johnson as he recalled some stories from the Chang Mai 6’s competition (not for the ears of any junior cricketer).
