Joe Ireland Stars on dust bowl, but Nomads fail to force the win
Nomads returned, after a fixture admin error in 2016 to the prettysetting of Headley CC in leafy Surrey and with blue skies accompanied by a strongside the Nomads were clearly in a buoyant mood. There was also a debut for George Metcalfe, half-brother of SportingAlfas cricket club former Spanish International and club captain Phil Pennick.
Nomads won the toss and elected to bat, unsurprising with thetemperature already soaring well over 30 degrees. Farrell and Dummer put on 60 in 11 overs andseemed completely untroubled against Tunnell and Barton (jnr). However theintro of Barton (snr) changed the game as he cleaned bowled Farrell, offeringno shot, with his first ball. On such a dry used wicket, baked in the summer heatall week Barton was turning the ball literally square.
Dummer fell to Headley skipper Midmer, LBW and Lane, Brockton & Metcalfe followed him back into the pavilion soon after from the bowling of Barton’s impressive offies. Nomads had fallen from the comparative safety of61-0 to 94-5 so the partnership of another debutant Adam Sumner (son of Peter)and Joe Ireland was an important one. The pair grafted gamefully and put on a50 stand before Sumner was cleaned up via the heavily tattooed Dickinson for agritty 17. Ireland then followed spooning an attempted lofted drive off the bowling of young Winslett for 33 (his first adult wicket we believe, he is 11 years old).
However, Nomads had a deep batting line up and a swashbuckling 23from Shawl and old stager Professor Chris Page who swept his way to 13 got Nomadsto 181 all out from just under 40 overs. With the wicket now turning even more prodigiouslythis was going to be a tough chase for the home side. Barton (Snr) was the pickof the Headley bowlers, 5 for 43 from 12 impressive overs.
Nomads took the field in (very) warm sunshine and Shawl andIreland took the new ball. Brockton opted for the tall left arm slow bowlerinstead of Adam Sumner due to the amount of turn and varied bounce witnessed duringthe Headley innings. What a start for the Nomads, Ireland’s first ball was larrupedstraight to Sajjad Shawl stationed at a near silly point, a great catch fromthe mighty Sajjad and a first ball 0 for Calvert. 2 balls later and the burlyDickinson had snicked off to Brockton at 1st slip who pouched a goodlow catch. Headley 0-2 from 3 balls ! Surely not de ja vu from 2015 when Shawland Brockton reduced Headley to 8-10 from the opening 7 overs of the their innings!
Ireland continued to wheel away impressively, 1 more wicket comingas Winslett Snr tried to attack and failed (Stumped by Dummer). Headley were now effectively 33-4 with Fernando aggravating an old shoulder injury andforced to unfortunately retire hurt.
Adam Sumner replaced Shawl & ran in with gusto and accuracybut Dickson and Barton (snr) were remaining stoic until Farrell pouched aswirling effort at deep square leg and when skipper Midmer was lured out of hisground (stumped Dummer) Ireland had taken the first 5 wickets to fall. Pagereplaced Ireland and was immediately rewarded as the watchful Dickson played acompletely uncharacteristic shot to Page’s first ball and chipped to Peter Sumnerwho grabbed the opportunity at Mid-Off with ease.
Enter Headley stalwart Pickering and in tandem with the chirpy Tunnellgave Professor Page some long handle, however the experienced purveyor of lobshad the last laugh, having Pickering caught behind by Dummer via a top edgedsweep. The 20 overs had started and Headley were up against it but Nomads thenstruggled to dislodge Tunnell until Peter Sumner trapped him LBW looking topull a length ball over mid-wicket. Sumner (snr) was bowling an impressive lineand length but Page was oddly off-colour bowling too many low full tosses andballs harmlessly going past the leg stump. With overs running out and 5 menround the bat, Winslett (Jnr) was taken at silly mid on by Farrell (impressiveas always in the field) and Headley’s injured left hander Fernando had to returnto the crease effectively at no11, clearly in some pain. He and Billy Bartonbatted out the final few overs without too much alarm. Young Barton’s techniquewas impressive and despite both Shawl and Ireland returning to snuff out the youngster, neither were up to the task, clearly very stiff after their earlier efforts.
Headley closed on 132-9 from 40 overs some 50 runs short ofvictory but with a lot of positives to take from the game. At 7pm thetemperature was still in the late 20s so the players congregated outside theHeadley CC pavilion to enjoy a few refreshing cold beers. Joe Ireland generouslybought a jug for his 5 wicket haul, a stupendous display of slow-left armbowling on an albeit very helpful surface.
Headley’s President Sir Michael Pickard was among the interested spectators who joined both sides for a drink after the conclusion of the match. Our Thanks to Headley CC for their hospitality and a delicious tea, plus to Nomads President Michael Blumberg for officiating in the oppressive heat.
