Debutant leads Nomads to victory
Nomads won by 44 runs, but that score does not do credit to the fight back of the Nomads in the "battle of the wandering sides" which was staged at Chris Page’s league club, Kempton CC. A slightly ramshackledvenue, but with a rustic charm. Buccaneers' skipper Will Metcalfe inserted the Nomads upon winning the toss, on a used wicket, perhaps hoping forsome early assistance with the new cherry (& indeed Metcalfe did take the newball with accurate left armer Leefe who bowled a mammoth 22 over unbrokenspell).
Massey and debutant Alex Dillon opened up for the Nomads who had a deep batting line up. The pairhad put on 19 when Metcalfe bowled a horrible full toss at Massey who larruped it to young Ludo Milne at mid wicket. Surely a no-ball? The umpires confered,but Stevenson (square leg, who signaled a no ball) was overruled by his colleague Horton so poor Jack was on his way for just 12.
Skipper Brockton joined Dillon and the pair put on 121 in a watchful partnership. Leefe wasbowling accurately plus taking advantage of the rough outside both righthanders off stump and the introduction of seamer Halkon did not improve therate as he roared in and bowled with gusto. The outfield was also a little lush towards the boundary edge meaning 4swere at a premium. Dillon and Brockton both got to 50 without much alarm butthen the Nomads captain drilled a drive at Ludo Milne who lept to his right totake a fine catch. Jamie Lane’s fist game of the season was unfortunately forgettable as he was “adjudged” caught behind by Oliver Metcalfe for a 2nd ball duck. Nomads had lost 2 wickets in 3 balls.
However, in strode experienced Ross Ormiston who shepherded Dillon to his 1st Nomads hundred in an assertive 49 run partnership. A glide down to the vacant 3rd man boundary was more than enough to get the young Aussie to 3 figures. After this Dillon was bowled (dragged-on) bythe returning Buccaneers skipper but Jeremy Lascelles kept up the impetus with a near run a ball unbeaten 20 to get Nomads to a position of strength and a declaration at 233-4. Ross Ormiston ended on 33*, his good form of the early part of the season continuing.
Chris Page had told the Kempton CC staff to pull out all the stops for tea and they did not disappoint, a delicious spread (and even ice lollies for desert). Nomads took the fieldfull of confidence and with the new ball pairing Robbins and Shawl the Nomads were looking for early wickets. The pair did not disappoint, Shawl dismissing keeper Metcalfe(who hit aton off Nomads in 2014), caught by Brockton at 3rd slip and then cleaned up Vollers with his trademark toe-crushing Yorker. Robbins had the impressive Ludo Milne caught behind, a cracking diving catch by Saurabh Wahi who was to impress with the gloves all afternoon. So at 21-3 Nomads thought the game was in the bag.
However, Jack Massey had warned of two of his friends being in the oppositions ranks and Moules and Halkon put on a sparking 121 partnership being especially savage on the firstfew overs from Chris Page + knocking Moeser and Massey out of the attack. Brockton turned to Dillon, the man of the moment and he had Moules caught behind for 64 but the game was now in thebalance, 72 needed off the final 18 overs.
With an end open and a suspected soft underbelly middle/lower order Chris Page was quickly back in the act, despite taking a nasty blow to the nose off a fearsome drive that was deflectedoff his left arm. Page, from the school of hard knocks, wiped away the claretand carried on stoically. He had Milne (Snr) trapped palpably LBW and Giliver stumped smartly by Wahi to reduce the Buccaneers to 168-6. Dillon then had skipper Metcalfe also stumped by Wahi and the visitors were up against it. However with Halkon hitting the ball cleanly at the other end and only 66 needed to win Nomads needed to dismiss him to secure victory.
Page was equal to thetask, yet another stumping for Wahi, Page’s “leg cutter” doing the businessand bamboozling the set batsman. Victory was now all but secure, the final two wicketscoming in quick succession for Dillon who finished with 4-26 to accompany oldstager Page’s 3-39. Saurabh Wahi also claimed 6 dismissals. Nomads winning by 44 runs but in doing so taking the final7 Buccaneer wickets for just 30. The home side bundled out for 191.
Alex Dillon generously purchased a jug for his hundred, Saurabh for his 6 wicket haul and the Nomads lingered long into the evening in the early summer sunshine at Kempton CC. Our thanks to the genial bar steward and his daughter for looking after both XIs during the day.
