Nomads fail to chase challenging total at Ascott Park
An entertaining fixture was played out under blue skies and warm weather at the beautiful venue of Ascott Park on Sunday vs The Buccaneers.
Nomads lost the toss and unsurprisingly Will Metcalfeelected to bat first. Nomads did take anearly wicket courtesy of a KD Desai in-swinger but it was not until the introductionof Chris Page that Nomads started to assert any influence in the game.
His first ball yielded a wicket, Leaf (Jnr) who had taken aliking to Desai dispatching him for a massive 6, bowled neck and drop by theexperienced campaigner. His 2nd ball should have dismissed Leaf(snr) for a golden duck but Div Mishra spilled the chance at square leg, theball bursting through his hands and trickling over the ropes for 4. Nomads were mediocre in the field, Pagedropping the same batsman off his own bowling and runs were leaking at quite arate to some of the less mobile fieldsmen.
Mishra was struggling with a knee injury and was off colourbowling too many full tosses, so he was replaced by Bill Johnson who hadarrived some 30 minutes late despite President Blumberg reminding him of thestart time not 24 hours before! Billbowled accurately but without reward, Sajjad and KD were recalled and struckimmediately as the Buccaneers players continued to swing merrily. Brockton pouched Leaf at mid-wicket, andDesai dismissed the burly Buccaneers opener 3 shy of his hundred as he holedout to the large safe hands of Shawl at wide long on.
Nomads were getting back into the game, but were expecting adeclaration. This did not come as Buccaneers continued to lose wickets at quitea rate, Desai rewarded with a 5 wicket haul with Shawl taking threescalps. After 51 overs Metcalfe calledin his troops on 251-9, Nomads would receive around 45 back needing to score at5.6 runs per over to overhaul this somewhat daunting total.
Skipper Brockton and Kie Farrell resumed their partnershipat the top of the order and recorded yet another 50+ stand before Kie wastrapped LBW sweeping for a well-crafted 32 containing a couple of crisp drivesfrom the former West Herts cricketer. Brockton was continuing his fine start to the 2018 season, butKandampully in at no3 larruped a low full toss from Leaf (jnr) for yet another lowscore. Nomads 2 down but just about upwith the rate.
Stokes joined Brockton who had now passed 50, Stokes looking in good touch after some runs for the Bank of England in recent weeks. Alas he was sawn off by the Buccaneers umpire, a genial fellow who to that point had remained stoic in the face of some loud and vociferous shouts. Nomads were once again put on the back foot as Stokes made his way back to the pavilion.
The Mighty Sajjad Shawl was promoted up the order to give itsome long handle and he dispatched his first ball over mid wicket for 4.However, he was bowled round his legs by the Buccaneers leggie when lookingwell set. Former Durham CCC pro BillJohnson was out cheaply, chipping tamely to backward point, who did his best todrop the chance but held on at the 2nd attempt.
Nomads were 5 down but Richmond all-rounder KD Desai joinedthe Nomads captain with 141 needed as the final 20 overs started. The field was spread for Brockton and up for Desai, bad idea, as KD took 20 off the next over with a series of fine drivesand a flat 6 into the sightscreen. Pressure off the Nomads, or so we thoughtuntil Brockton (78) mis-read Leaf Snr’s arm ball and was bowled trying to driveoff the back foot.
Jeremy Lascelles, batting in a rather unfamiliar position,joined Desai who was looking like a million $$. Desai looked to up the rate butwas stumped for 42 advancing to Leaf (snr) not regaining his ground. Wicket keeper Wahi (who had kept very smartly during the Buccaneers innings) and Lascelles then tried in vain to keep up withthe rising run rate. Jeremy dragging on before trudging off.
Wahi and Mishra then batted out the final 7 overs for a draw, it becoming clear the Nomads would not overhaul the 63 needed off the final 42 balls. Players round the bat, looking for a half chance, but Wahi was not content to block, smashing Leaf for a massive 6 over mid wicket. Nomads ended up short of their target, perhaps rueing their own mediocrity in the field during the middle part of the Buccaneers innings.
Nomads President Michael Blumberg spent the day topping up his tan umpiring and we thank both officials for their time at Ascott Park. Our thanks to Will Metcalfe and his Buccaneers side for an enjoyable day.
Nomads return to Ascott Park the weekend after next, an all day fixture vs Stragglers of Asia.
