Nomads win in remarkable Lazarus like comeback

What a day at Marlow Park CC ! In a game that see-sawedseveral times Nomads ran out winners by just 1 run, watched by an enthusiastic crowd in Marlow, just a stone’s throw from Henley. Nomads won the toss and elected to bat, thewicket looked a little mottled and had misbehaved in recent years. Marlow ParkCC are looking to plough some ££ into the square to get it back to its formerglory. We wish them well that that endeavour.

Kandampully was removed early in the piece, bowled by the MPCC skipper Ben Ralphs off cutter, but Brockton and Dummer forged a partnershipof 93 in 19 overs before the latter was bowled by a Kim Barlow full toss thathe looked to larrup out of the ground. Dummer on his way for 44, and Nomadsstarting to tick along at nearly 5 an over. The wicket wasn’t great, severalballs mis-behaving and Brockton was stumped for 54 advancing to Barlow, Nomads Kyle Bradley (who plays for Marlow Park on a Sunday) whipping off the bails(and all three stumps) with glee.

Young Tom Marshall was looking in decent touch, but he & Ross Ormiston were dismissed in quick succession as Nomads started to losetheir way.  Shawl and Prestell added somemuch needed impetus in the final 8 overs, debutant Prestell (21) and Shawl(31*) striking the ball sweetly to score a flurry of boundaries and to getNomads to a decent score of 196-6 in the allotted 40 overs.  This was some 20 over par in the eyes of the Nomads brain trust. How little they knew!

After tea and cake (yum yum) Nomads took the field and Shawland Marshall (Jnr) took the new ball. Shawl struck early, clean bowling Trevor Glanster with a full Yorker.  Mindful ofthe 8 over limit on bowlers Shawl was replaced after 5 overs by the evergreen Oliver Croom-Johnson who immediately took 2 wickets, dismissing Stephen and Alderman, the latter with a perfectly pitched outswinger. However Oliver was struggling alittle despite taking two key wickets, and was removed from the attack after a4 over burst.

Andy Marshall then got in the act with two quick scalps, fully deserved and courtesy of two fine catches from Nomads two best fielders.  Tom’s catch to dismiss Ralphs was a spectaculardiving effort to the longest boundary on the ground and right in front of thepavilion.  Andy Marshall then dismissed MPCC stalwart Kim Barlow, also via super catch, this time Vic Kandampully. He may have failed with the bat but Vic leaped above his head to pouch the powerfuldrive with both hands.

MPCC had collapsed from 57-2 to 82-5 but the key batsman ofBradley and Chahal were taking a liking to the off colour Chris Page as he was going at 7 an over bowling too many loose balls. The game was starting to slip away from the Nomads despite Andy Marshall returning accurate figures (as always) of 8-0-22-2.  Brockton was cajoled intobowling and although accurate his first three overs did not yield any success at the other end Tom Marshall was back on for a 2nd spell but was leaking runs, despite running in with gusto. Bradley and Chahal had turned the game in MPCC’s favour putting on animpressive partnership of 108 in good time.

Tom Marshall had bowled out and Sajjad was recalled as alast throw of the dice as MPCC had moved to 190-5 with 6 overs left.  It was then the game changed and the almost unthinkable occurred. Brockton bowled Bradley (37) who had batted well to getthe home side to the brink of victory, the Nomads skipper then had the chirpy South African Goosen caught behind first ball (good catch from stand-in keeperSteve Dummer).  Shawl then removed Julian White who was trapped in front of all 3. However, the home side were only a blow away from victory and Nomadsneeded to keep Chahal off strike as much as possible.

The field was set back to give him the option to take asingle and inexplicably he did on two occasions off the first ball of the over. This exposed the tail and Toby Fry was bowled by a Brockton inswinger. This left young Joe Hogan who had bowled 8 overs of well flighted leggies earlier onin the day, to face a full over from Sajjad Shawl, the big 6”4 seamer ran in and off the 4th ball of the penultimate over what was unthinkable some 20 minutes earlier occurred. Shawl struck again and bowled Hogan for Nomads to win by 1 run. The narrowest of margins. Chahal was stranded on 70 not out, but Nomads celebrated a famous win which was full of character and showed that experience counts for a hell of a lot in this game.

The Nomads President was almost lost for words as the sides repaired to the Marlow Park bar, cold Peroni all round for the victorious Nomads.

Our thanks as always to Marlow Park, and Mike Barlow for hosting us (and for scoring) as well as Michael Blumberg for his long stint umpiring, wearing his Nomads cap in 32 degrees was quite an effort!  We look forward to a return to Higginson Park again in 2019.
