Page 'century' helps Nomads to 5 wicket win

Nomads defeated Hampshire village side Sherfield on Loddon by 5 wickets on Sunday in the inaugural match which will be played each season for the "Michael Blumberg tankard".

Sherfield on Loddon put out a strong side with two pacy opening bowlers, current Nomads Steve Dummer and Chris Wilson as well as Steve's brother, a former Bromley 1st XI all-rounder.  Tom Brockton won the toss and inserted the home side on a very good looking wicket (which Dummer had been working on all week as he lives opposite the ground!).

The returning Andy Smith and Brockton took the new cherry but neither were at their best, the fast outfield and hard wicket clearly to the batsmen's liking as Swift and Dummer put on 61 for the first wicket after a first over dolly drop off Smith's bowling. The introduction of Kiwi Ross Ormiston who had been out on a late one with "Bonker" Bill Johnson the night before broke the deadlock with both openers and the burly Vallis all falling victims to his accurate leg-spin.

The home side were now 87-3 and Chris Page was wheeling away from the road end in another accurate spell of slow bowling. He took his 98th, 99th (Chris Wilson, unsurprisingly LBW) and 100th wickets of the season, an outstanding achievement considering we are only in mid July !

The home side had slipped to 150-7 but with skipper Steve Dummer giving it some long handle and dispatching Page over long-on & into the ditch in successive balls clearly Sherfield on Loddon were on the charge.

The introduction of former Lord's Groundstaff & Notts 2nd XI cricketer Iggy Chowdhury (playing his first game for 2 years since triple heart-bypass surgery) did provide some mirth and variation, but his mixture of turning leggies and long-hops produced 4 wickets in just 5 overs as the Sherfield on Loddon batsmen committed harry carry in the search of quick runs. Dummer remained unbeaten on 38 but Nixon, Hooper and Clark were all out playing foolish strokes. Saurabh Wahi claimed 5 dismissals, (3 stumpings and 2 catches) in a very impressive display behind the stumps, he ended the innings diving full stretch to his right to claim a stunning catch off Chowdhury.  Sherfield on Loddon all out for 211. Ormiston, Page & Chowdhury sharing all 10 wickets.

After a long and enjoyable tea (plus ale from the brewery, generously sponsored by our hosts) Jamie Lane and Richard Mackey opened up for the Nomads, but although both looked in good touch they were cleaned up by ex-Godalming 1st XI speedster Hooper who bowled with good pace and aggression.  Ross Ormison's late night had clearly caught up with him as he spooned a catch to Smith off the bowling of Clark for just 2 and Nomads were in a spot of bother at 55-3. Jamie Dixon and Andy Smith then forged an assertive partnership of 56 in good time to get Nomads back in the game. Dixon, in particular looked in fine form finding the boundary on a regular basis with a series of drives and powerful strokes on the on-side.

Dixon was dismissed just shy of what would have been a richly deserved half century, bowled by Steve Dummer's off-spin log hop. Smith was soon to follow for an enterprising 27, tired out and Brockton joined Richard Fanthorpe with a further 80 needed for victory. This was attained with consummate ease and with 5 overs of the 20 remaining. Brockton weighing in with 60 not out(fortuitously dropped behind) and Fanthrope a valuable 23 not out. Sherfield on Loddon did have a final throw of the dice re-introducing Hooper and Clarke to the attack, but this only increased Nomads charge to victory. The game was won with successive boundaries off Clark and the victorious Nomads retired to the club house for beers and banter in the evening sunshine.

Chris Wilson and Steve Dummer both spoke equally eloquently post match and the Nomads were certainly grateful of the kind hospitality from the home side and their supporters. The first trip of many to the pretty village in Hampshire. We look forward to returning and defending the Michael Blumberg tankard in 2016.

Several Nomads and Sherfielders moved on to a local hostelry afterwards and consumed an ale or more
