2016 Woking & Horsell vs Nomads tied match
2017 Woking & Horsell vs Nomads Nomads win by 10 wickets

Two results rarely seen in cricket, Nomads achieved both in successive visits to the pretty setting of Woking & Horsell CC in Surrey. Skipper Martin Peters won the toss and elected to bat on a slightly mottled looking (& used) wicket, fortunately it played better than it looked and the bat certainly dominated the ball.

Jemile Al-Derraji begrudgingly took the new cherry partnered by the evergreen Peter Sumner. Sumner was unfortunately not at his best and Tom Keene took advantage of some over-pitched deliveries driving powerfully down the ground. However, Al-Darraji was bowling an exceptional line and length and his late movement, predominantly away from the right-handers caused real issues. His 8 overs went for just 19 and he took the first 3 wickets to fall.

Despite Al-Darraji's best efforts W&H were making steady progress, 80-3 off 20 overs should have been a launching pad for a score in excess of 200. Keane was continuing on his merry way but the young home batsman did not take advantage of Nomads experienced (i.e older) fielders and plenty of singles were refused somewhat needlessly and Keene was deprived of the strike in the latter part of the innings. Nomads stuck to their task, Page bowling accurately, rewarded with the wicket of Pyle who looked like a cricketer of some promise. Div Mishra extracted the most out of the wicket, turning the ball sharply with his darty off-spin and the introduction of Dillon and Stokes stifled the rate further in the closing overs as both bowled accurately and kept the ball full meaning boundaries were hard to come by. Kyle Bradley took 2 catches and a stumping in a sold display behind the sticks. W&H ended their allotted 40 overs on 180-5, Keane left agonisingly just short of what would have been a well deserved hundred, stranded on 98*. Nomads stuck to their task gamefully, Dillon, Farrell, Mishra & Brockton covering several kilometres as the boundary riders for the majority of the last 20.

Nomads tucked into a tasty tea, Paul Maloney arrived to support the troops and say hello in the absence of President Blumberg who was plying his trade for the Bertie Joel Netters (who ??)

Former Hertfordshire league cricketers Brockton and Farrell opened up for the Nomads and Brockton signalled the intent of the visitors with two boundaries square of the wicket in the opening over off the Jade Dernbach look-a-like Jonny Ayling. Farrell was also in a impudent mood, showing no respect to the new ball and the pair registered a 50 stand in just the 9th over. Changes in the bowling did not offer skipper Peters any rest bite, as Waseem went at 7 an over and young seamer Malik also bowled too short allowing Farrell to get out his trademark pull shot to good effect. He raced past Brockton and raised his bat for 50 with the score on 81.

The pair continued after the drinks break drinks, the home bowlers creating no chances to get past the Nomads broad blades. Sharpless was introduced and found some turn but by then the fixture was almost over as a contest, the only thing that remained to be decided was if Nomads could get over the line quick enough before the rain forecast at 6pm arrived. Farrell went into overdrive, Brockton to a well crafted 50 and the pair went past the 150 mark untroubled.

Wicks bowled some loopy off-spin, but with the field back there were plenty of singles on offer for the pair to rotate the strike. Farrell brought up his century with successive boundaries off Wicks and even the returning Waseem could not take a wicket for the home side as Brockton drove through the covers to win the game mid way through the 31st over. Nomads chasing down a potentially tricky total to win with all 10 wickets in tact. 10 minutes after stumps were drawn it rained, and rained heavily for some 90 minutes.

A relatively early finish meant only one thing, jugs of beer! Kie Farrell did not disappoint and the Nomads left W&H CC well oiled and in good spirits. Our thanks to W&H for hosting us again, to Caryn Thompson for scoring immaculately and the jolly Nick Stevenson for officiating on the day. We wish W&H CC all the best for the remainder of their league campaign
