Nomads win, but not vs Stoics

Stoics were incomprehensibly unable to raise an XI so with two days notice lots of calls were made and a team was raised to play against Nomads for to scratch a paid for booking at the Ascot Park ground seemed madness . The team included reserves for the Stoics match, two friends from Capannelle who were on tour in UK and some friends of Alex Sykes from Berkshire.Owen Marshall swapped allegiance to play against his father and brother and Div Mishra answered a very late call to make 10 v 10.

Nomads won the toss and Tom Brockton unsurprisingly selected to bat on what looked like a decent deck. Nomads also boasted a very strong batting line up so runs on the board would be important. Al-Darraji and Brockton opened up and put on 93 in 21 overs in a well paced partnership. Both were dismissed when looking well set, Brockton run out after being sent back by Al-Darraji and Al-Darraji bowled when advancing down the wicket to Owen Marshall.. However the stand had put Nomads in a decent position, especially as it seemed that the Ascot House surface was now taking prodigious turn.

The Presidents XI looked to put the brakes on the run rate and the in-form pair of Chris Hedges and Vic Kandampully were both were dismissed relatively cheaply while Rob Wycherley  who looked in good form was undone by a google from Kekulawala and inside edged onto his stumps. Ormiston and young Tom Marshall looked to rebuild and they put on a 50 stand in good time getting Nomads up to and over 200. With the declaration looming Ormiston and Marshall were dismissed and Chris Royals bowled the ball before the players were called into take tea. Nomads closing on a par total of 221. The President's XI spinners had indeed found a lot of turn in the pitch and with the keen fielding and good throwing of this mostly young side Nomads had had to work hard to reach this total.

As always the plethora of food available was plentiful and delicious, Nomads also tucked into some Graham's port brought back from the Oporto cricket tour in April.

Nomads started positively, Tom Marshall claiming the early wicket of Ghulam with an off cutter and Wakers unecessarily ran himself outTom and his father Andy bowled accurately. However, Alex Sykes was at the crease and looking dangerous. Two close LBW appeals were turned down early in his innings but after that he went into overdrive, tucking into Chris Royals leggies and taking apart Chris Page. He was supported by Owen Marshall who launched his father's bowling with gusto but then was caught off Royals mishitting a lonw bouncing long hop to Al-Darraji at mid wicket.Kevin Kekulawla joined Sykes and these two added nearly a hundred runs before Sykes was dismissed caught behind off somewhat battered Page.

With the President's XI needing some 58 runs off 12 overs. Andy Marshall was recalled along with Tom to mop up the innings. Teenage Crickton attacked the bowling while Kekulalwala played more circumspectly and these two had added nearly 30 when Andy removed Crichton for 21 and Mishra for a duck.Joe Davies swung his bat merrily if briefly for 13 before also falling to Andy Marshall, 183-7 and Alex Richards followed shortly after.

So with 21 needed off 3 but only 1 wicket left Kekulawala and President Blumberg looked to be batting out for the draw without difficulty. Then off the last ball of the penultimate over President Blumberg was run out rather carelessly, some quick thinking from Vic Kandampully stationed half way back at long-on and an arrow like throw on the bounce into the gloves to Wycherley who removed the bails, Blumberg agonisingly inches short of his crease.

Nomads had won just over 20 runs with just six deliveries remaining. A thoroughly entertaining fixture and our thanks to all those who answered the late call .

Nomads return to Ascot House in early September for the Gooding, Pinter, Lamb memorial fixture vagainst The Gaieties. It is also the Gaieties 80th anniversary so a grand occassion is anticipated.
