Tom Liversidge hits maiden ton
Nomads ran out winners by 8 wickets and with nearly 20 overs to spare vs a Ley Hill side who on paper looked to be a useful blend of youth and experience. Ley Hill CC captain Paul Green won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket that showed some signs of the heavy overnight rain but played remarkably well. One side of the ground had a very very very short boundary, the other was nearer 85 metres so shot selection would be imperative.
Nomads struck early, skipper Brockton knocking over the Ley Hill opener (who had scored a hundred the day before against UCS Old Boys) & in tandem with the evergreen Andrew Smith the Nomads turned the screw and the Ley Hill players were starved of runs. Nadeem, in at no3 could not get the ball off the square as he was finally stumped off Smith's final delivery of his spell, a richly deserved wicket for Smith who as usual bowled an exemplary line and length.
Changes in the bowling did not bring any rest-bite for the home side as Blackheath's Ben Butcher wheeled away with his flat off-spin to claim 4 wickets, despite star player Thompson flogging him to the boundary on a couple of occasions. However, Butcher had the last laugh as David Steel hung onto a flat drive at long-on to dismiss the burly Ley Hill cricketer for 27. The home side were now in all sorts of trouble and despite Tom Liversidge sending down a few loose deliveries and Ley Hill's "Ian Botham" in at no6 caught first ball, giving the Nomads players much mirth, to put Butcher on a hat-trick. David Steele and Ross Ormiston also bowled impressive spells of accurate slow bowling and Richmond CC's Saurabh Wahi was solid behind the stumps.
At the end of the 40 overs a total of 149-9 was well below par on a ground with such a small boundary on one side.
Liversidge & Kandampully then put this total into perspective with an opening stand of well over 100 to put Nomads in the box seat. Vic was happy to push the single and Tom lambasted his way to his maiden hundred which was full of high quality pulls and drives and included 19 boundaries. Captain Green's gentle left arm "floaters" were dispatched and Nadeem, clearly keen to redeem himself after his stodgy innings bowled one over for 23 to complete a pretty awful day at the office for him.
Green turned to star player Thompson latterly whose leg-breaks accounted for Kandampully for 34 and Liversidge was dismissed with just just 1 run needed trying to finish the game with an audacious ramp shot. A classy 107 from Tom, the first of many hundreds for Nomads no doubt.
David Steele and Andy Hill were at the crease when the final run was scored. Nomads cruising to their total with 18 overs left and for the loss of 2 wickets.
An early finish saw many of the victorious Nomads retire to the local pub in the village for a celebratory pint (or three). A busy week of cricket continues with 3 matches over 4 days at Headley, Barnes & High Beach vs East Hertfordshire Cavaliers. Please keep the match managers aware of your availability for the month of May.
