Nomads humbled at Tiddington

The Nomads XII convened in South Oxfordshire in high spirits for the annual match against Cherwell League side Tiddington CC. Fortunately the forecast rain stayed away all day, but the Nomads may have wished that it had arrived, as they were beaten comprehensively by over 100 runs.

Kyle Bradley unwittingly provided early hilarity when he misread captain Tom Brockton’s memo and arrived at the ground smartly attired, in sharp contrast to his teammates; albeit he had patently omitted to iron his salmon pink shirt. Kyle elected to “white up” some 45 minutes before the start as a consequence.

Convivial Tiddington captain and friend of the Nomads Nick Pykett won the toss and elected to bat, and the opening overs passed without much incident, with Tom Marshall and James Hamilton failing to trouble the Tiddington openers greatly. Indeed, the biggest stir in the first 15 overs came when Nomads President and spectator Michael Blumberg’s glass of rosé wine was spilt, when he was accidentally knocked by an unruly (and immediately apologetic) Tiddington player.

Tom Marshall’s efforts were finally rewarded late in his 10 over spell, when he took three quick wickets, including both openers. This brought together Tiddington’s young number 4, A. Davies, & veteran Jeff Higgs, who was batting at 5. The Nomads were especially wary of the latter, but hopeful of nipping him out early given that he had not been seen without a G&T in hand up to that point.

Andy Marshall and Berkshire’s Mark Firth bowled tidily but Higgs accelerated during his innings to finish on a fine 81*, being supported by Tiddington’s number 6 “Mr Miyagi” after Firth had dismissed Davies caught & bowled. The slow bowlers, including Ben Butcher and veteran leg break bowler Stan Wooliscroft, came in for particular punishment as the Nomads flagged in the field towards the end of the innings.

Tiddington declared on 227-5, which would leave the Nomads around 50 overs to chase the total. As a tasty tea was consumed, along with the customary port, hopes were high that the strong Nomads top order, which had Chesham 1XI player Josh Drague opening the batting and Brockton at 6, would be able to knock the runs off with relative ease.

However, things did not go to plan, as Vic Kandampully, Drague, Indy Rajah and Bradley (who was, to his dismay, given palpably LBW by eager Tiddington umpire Anton) all departed swiftly, playing rash strokes. This left the Nomads 32-4 and requiring the two Toms, Marshall & Brockton, to consolidate. This they did, but disaster struck when both were dismissed in the same over from off-break bowler J.A. Davies; Brockton’s stumping being the second of these, drawing an exclamation of horror from the watching President.

From then on the outcome of the match was not in doubt, as despite some hearty resistance from James Hamilton the Nomads were bowled out for 115, before the final hour had even begun. Chinaman bowler “Sinky” Kitchen bowled tidily for the hosts and claimed two wickets, before Pykett wrapped up proceedings.

Surely the most insipid Nomads batting performance for some time.

Nevertheless the Nomads repaired to the Tiddington bar, consoling themselves with the thought that the early finish would mean more time for imbibing. Hours of chatter and ale drinking followed, with umpire Chris Page typically forthright in his opinions. A beef bourguignon, with meat from locally reared bovines, also went down a treat. The jovial Higgs was seen in deep discussion with Kyle Bradley, giving him pointers on matters ranging from his batting stance to how to properly press his shirt. Salt was rubbed in Nomadic wounds when they also came second in the traditional game of Aunt Sally.

When your correspondent left several hours after the conclusion of the game, the still whited Brockton, along with Vic Kandampully, was in high spirits; both were staying nearby, the latter in a local hostelry. It is assumed that revelry in the Tiddington bar continued late into the night.

Hopefully next year’s match provides in a more even contest but equal amount of fun!
