Ant Muir and Chris Page secure Nomads victory

This was Nomads first visit to Kew which replaced a fixture arranged with North London. Nomads were not a strong eleven but our inside informnation affirmed that neither would be Kew.

Kew won the toss and batted and made very slow progress on a damp pitch.Mike Robbins caught and bowled Ashton as he drove in frustration whereupon debutant Ant Muir had Dalmedo caught by Robbins for a duck.Raj Sood replacing Robbins removed the obdurate Croft so Kew were now 25-3 off 13 overs. Mahadaven and Thomas added some 44 runs before Andrew Smith caught Mahadaven off Chris Page in the 22nd over. Sandu hung about while a further 35 runs were added before he succumbed to a Gerard Soames full toss hit straight at Ross Ormiston,104-5 off 32 overs.

Now the reason for the innings motoring along was due almost entirely to Thomas the 1st XI overseas player who should have been stumped quite early off Page. Although Soames took two more wickets Thomas smote merrily away surviving several dropped and missed catches. Thomas duly reached his century and was bowled by Andrew Smith so the innings closed at 183 rather more than seemed likely ealier on indeed some 79 runs off the last 8 overs.

After an excellent tea Nomads opened with the experienced Nigel Keess and the young Marcus Budgen. Budgen went for a duck still rather the worse for wear after a previous night of self indulgence and a seriously late arrival by Double Decker Bus. Keess was adjudged lbw and at the same score Ross Omiston played forward to be given out caught behind,27-3. Skipper Smith and Soames added a useful 44 before Soames was caught behind and Smith bowled,71-5 off in the 19th over.

Nomads innings was not looking good at this point. However Chris Page joined youngster Ant Muir and these two added a further 104 runs with Muir passing his first fifty for Nomads. He fell, caught and bowled, when the match was almost won. Raj Sood applied the long handle and Nomads were home with 15 balls to spare. Well played Muir and Page.

During the afternoon Nomads were pleased to have Russell Mann and Andy Stokes come to watch and enjoy a pint or two. We also had the pleasure of the company former England Rugby international and amateur County cricketer Chris Wynn." I came to watch you bat " he told the padded up Nomads President. Thankfully Nomads had no need of the President's batting!

Many Nomads lingered long at the Kew Clubhouse on a pleasant Autumn evening and only the draw of the Rugby World Cup interupted what may have been a long evening's drinking.
