| At this match David Oatway bade farewell to Blighty and demanded to open the innings. He re-appeared at L'Alfas Del Pi in 2003 October with a very large dog. He passed away in Spain in 2012. |
Isabel thwarts Nomads bowlers after Tolputt and Symondson spectacular
Steve Tolputt (10 x 6s) and Rob Symondson(6 x 6s) put on an entertaining stand of 164 which laid the basis of substantial total. Richard Durden also hit a six so Nomads innings including some 17 sixes.
Despite some early wickets Nomads quest to bowl out Abinger was frustrated by two stands between the resolute but scoreless Isabel Duncan and first Wood and then Van Pelt.
For the last over the skipper rather ungraciously removed all the fielders from the off side and bowled a series of offside half volleys, three of which Isabel elegantly stroked to the boundary and the match was drawn
Before the game started much to amusement of the remaining Nomads a great hissing and cursing took place as 'Mad' Oatway and 'Horrible' Horne took cognizance of each other's presence. They had both done articles at the same time in Manchester with some well known Accounting company. The mutual loathing was wondrous to behold and we were all puzzled as to how the club had failed to select them in the same eleven before.
Oaters announced that he was emigrating to Spain and that this would be his last Nomads match so he should open which he did with Steve Tolputt. Oaters swung mightily from the first ball which he hit for four and then was horrified that Steve played a maiden as was his wont at the other end. He remonstarted with Steve between overs and in the 4th over Steve duly hit a four and then a six. More remonstrations took place between overs and then Oaters charged the first ball of the fifth over iscued and was caught at Mid on. He strode off in considerable irritation informing the rest of the team that the Australian was an idiot and how could he partner such a fellow. After a due pause he emerged from the dressing room to watch Steve's second six.
We had two actors playing for us, Ben Nealon and Richard Durden, but the drama enacted by Oaters and Horne was a stunning show indeed.
