Experience reigns supreme over youth as Chris Page is the tormentor once more
Nomads won a close encounter at Crouch End on Saturday, victory coming off the penultimate ball of the match. The game commenced late, 1pm a mix up regarding the confirmed start time and Nomads elected to field upon winning the toss.
Local lad Mike Robins and "senior pro" Andy Smith opened for the home side, both rewarded early with wickets (ct Robins & Liversidgerespectively). However keeper Courtney and Pratik added 50 for the 4th wicket, Pratik in particular looking a class act on a pretty tricky wicket to bat on.
However, Nomads kept plugging away and the introduction of old stager Chris Page changed the game in the away sides favor. Page ran through the middle and lower order and Andy Marshall took the key wicket of Pratik for 70, tempting him to loft down the ground where Liversidge circled and took the catch.
Pope Gregory took the final wicket, the ball before the declaration and Crouch End had been bundled out for 176, having been 113-3 at one point this was quite some come back from the Nomads. Chris Page leading the way with 6-48 from 12 overs, the stand out performance.
Crouch End member and Nomads stalwart Keith Alexander opened up for the visitors with young Tom Liversidge but both were dismissed with the score on 27, and after 10 overs Nomads were in a spot of bother at 27-2. Brockton and professional musician Jim Lawrence looked to rebuild the innings and in an enterprising partnership dragged the visitors back into the game with a stand of almost 80. However, Lawrence went in theAchillesand he limped off after being taken at cow corner for a well crafted 39.
Paul Wakefield's stay at the crease was a short one, top edging left armer Charles and being caught by the Crouch End skipper. Andy Smith joined Brockton with work still to do, however the Nomads captain had reached his 50 and with 10 overs left Nomads needed 62 to win. In the face of some accurate bowling (and defensive field settings) the asking rate started to climb but Smith restored order with a 6 over mid-wicket taking 12 off a Charles over to get Nomads back on the straight and narrow.
17 needed off 2 overs, became 5 off the last over and Smith cool as a cucumber clipped the penultimate ball of the game to deep-mid wicket for the Nomads to win by 6 wickets with just 1 ball remaining.
A close game of cricket and a remarkable performance from Nomads considering Crouch End had half their league 1st XI playing, average age 27. Nomads, average age a shade over 50. Clearly experience counts for something !
