Tail wags as Nomads scrape home against Tiddington

Nomads put in a strong performance on Saturday to beat a young and enthusiastic Tiddington side by the slender margin on 2 wickets. Tiddington skipper Nick Pykett won the toss and elected to bat on a wicket with more than a tinge of green, the Smiths took the new cherry for the home side. Ben struck first bouncing out the dangerous Matt Maule who spooned a catch to Vic Kandampully at short mid-wicket.

Smith Snr, Andrew, was wheeling away at the other end and assisted by some quick hands from Andy Stokes in the covers reduced the home side to 2 wickets down inside the opening 10 overs. However, a partnership of note between two promising young cricketers looked to be taking the game away from the home side. Skipper Brockton (back from 3 weeks in Zimbabwe) looked a little rusty but produced a beauty to knock over the settled batsman for 38 and then repeated the dose just a few deliveries later, taking 2 wickets in 6 overs.

The home side were happy to consolidate, Chris Royals and Ben Butcher combining 20 overs of accurate spin and with wickets continuing to fall at relatively regular intervals, including Elliot for 73 (LBW Butcher) the home side declared (generously some thought) on 229-9 from 48 overs. Nomads would have a similar number of overs to chase the total.

After a super tea debutant James Muir and Vic Kandampully opened up for the visitors, unfortunately the usually reliable Kandampully was bowled neck and crop, Muir following soon after for 20 and when Oli Soames was LBW the Nomads were in more than a spot of bother. Andy Stokes counter attacked but Tom Liversidge was also sent on his way and when Stokes was dismissed by the diminutive spinner Nomads were up against it at 106-6. 230 was looking a long way off but Brockton (batting at no8) and Gerard Soames grafted well to get the score up to 150. Unfortunately Soames miss-judged the length of a delivery and was plumb in front playing an injudicious pull shot and Andy Smith after what was probably the short of the day was caught and bowled the very next delivery.

Lots still to do, 70 needed and only 2 wickets in hand. Ben Smith strode to the crease and looked in good touch from the first ball, the tall seamer using his long levers to good effect to strike the ball sweetly, generally straight down the ground or over mid-wicket.

Brockton had reached 50, the side 200 and with overs left Pykett recalled his opening bowlers in the attempt to break the partnership. This only accelerated the rate further and Smith / Brockton knocked off the remaining runs with ease, Brockton ending with 74* and Smith a boundary laden 39*. Nomads running out winners by just 2 wickets with 4 overs remaining.

Once again the home XI excelled themselves after the game, a delicious meal was prepared for both sides and eager spectators and plenty of banter exchanged and beer drunk. As an added bonus the sides competed in a game of "Aunt Sally", a traditional Oxfordshire past time similar to a coconut shy with rolling pins as your weapon of choice - Tiddington won 7-1, gaining a modicum of revenge!

Our thanks to both umpires (Michael Blumberg and Roland Maule) & the entire Tiddington side for an enjoyable days cricket and evenings entertainment.
