Inspired by Blackburn & Budgen Nomads win at The Royal Household

Nomads recorded a memorable victory at the stunning venue of the Royal Household in the foothills of Windsor Castle. The wicket looked a little sporting to say the least so Nomads inserted the home side upon winning the toss.

Nomads two prong pace attack of Blackburn and Shawl took the new cherry but found the going tough against the opening stone-wallers Cade & Goddard who happily soaked up 106 balls (and a few blows on the body) for a partnership of 31. Shawl and Blackburn were not rewarded for their efforts but a change in the bowling brought immediate dividends as a Marcus Budgen loosener was larruped straight to Andy Stokes at square leg. Budgen then repeated the dose trapping Cade LBW looking to sweep the Nomads off-spinner and when skipper Brockton castled chirpy Australian Baker with a big in-swinger the home side were in a spot of bother at 45-3.

Budgen's spell was a strange one, a combination of wicket taking balls and complete dross bamboozled the home side into some rather foolish shots. A cameo from Field (using Chris Gale's old bat) ended when he ran down the track and Jamie Lane did the rest, whipping off the bails with glee. In tandem Brockton and Budgen ran through the home side, skipper Crofts completely misreading the length of Budgen's quicker ball and Brockton bowling military man Otis Charles who looked like he could strike the ball some significant distance.

Royal Household had slumped to 140-9 but a 41 run 10th wicket partnership between the unfortunately named Scheiter and old stager Winter propelled the side to score of 181 from 41 overs. Sunny Fernando claimed the final wicket, Dom Ramjag taking the catch at cover. Marcus Budgen with 6-88 was the leading bowler for the Nomads, albeit a little expensive.

Brockton and Farrell opened the innings for the visitors after a wonderful tea in the pavilion at the Royal Household, plenty of cricket and royalty memorabilia on show including the Duke of Edinburgh batting against a Royal Household XI in the 1950's, skippering a start studded Invitational XI.

It became very apparent that the Royal Household's bowling line up was more impressive than their batting side, as South African Roberts moved the ball prodigiously off the seam and Morrisey charged in and bowled with real gusto from the pavilion end. Farrell was bowled neck and crop by an absolute beauty from Morrisey for 10 and Brockton after looking well set slashed a drive to Field in the gully region for just 23. Nomads 38-2 from 11 overs, game in the balance.

Enter Dom Ramjag and Robbie Blackurn whose contrasting styles worked perfectly against the impressive seam attack of the Royal Household. Ramjag played the anchor role, batting with supreme confidence and skill while Blackburn gave it the traditional long-handle and punished anything with width. A change in the bowling did not bring any rest-bite for the home side with Winter and Scheiter also proving ineffective, Blackburn launching Winter high over mid-wicket and into the hospitality tent for a huge maximum, and to also bring up his half century.

Ramjag was proceeding merrily along at the other end, pushing the 1's and 2's and the pair recorded a hundred partnership in just 24 overs. As a final throw of the dice Crofts recalled Roberts to the attack and he did gain some modicum of revenge having Blackburn adjudged caught behind (unfortunately off his shirt so the aggrieved batsman alleged) for a well crafted 75 (with 50 in boundaries).

Andy Smith joined Ramjag and fittingly the game was won by a elegant clip of the pads to also bring up a fine unbeaten half century for Nomads classy no3, the visitors running out winners by the margin of 7 wickets with just over 4 overs to spare

Plenty of banter and drinks back in the Royal Household pavilion after the game, our thanks for their hospitality and we look forward to continuing the friendly rivalry next season.
