Sluggish Nomads Batsmen fail the chase

Prospects of play were bleak when Nomads arrived at the Royal Household Ground so the bar was busy. However Royal Household's umpire Deborath Burns was positive and after much studying of the weather forecast on the more sophisticated mobile appliances used by some players it was agreed to play a 25/25 limited over match, 5 overs per bowler but with MCC Laws of cricket wides. The forecast predicted a 3/4 hour dry break. Had they got it right, for it was a fine dry evening, a longer declaration game may have been accomplished.

The Royal Household won the toss and batted first. Openers Croft and Glenn batted with aggressive intent yet despite the statuesque nature of many of Nomads fielders the run rate was modest. With both openers out and A Maxfield run out by Radia the hosts were 38-3 in the 9th over. Oliver Croom Johnson and Brockton with a wicket each.

R Maxfield and C Moore dug in and the innings proceeded at around 4 runs an over reaching 101 off 20. Moore now accelerated completed a fifty as the score raced to 139 off 25.

Uncertain of the weather the teams turned round after a ten minute interval. Nomads opened with steady exprerienced Ross Ormiston and the big slapper of the ball Sean Reilly. However The Household's opening bowlers were bowling a tight line and length so Reilly struggled to find the meat of the bat and gave a catch behind after facing 19 balls. Nomads skipper Tom Brockton joined Ormiston and these two added 66 but at well below the required run rate. Somewhat frustrated Ormiston(38 runs off 62 balls) miscued a pull to be caught by Nutt at wide deep mid on. Bill Johnson followed having been instructed to hit out by his captain. Maxfield duly bowled another long hop and Bill smashed it cross bat to the bowler's right who took a good catch. Maxfield failed to take his hat trick but Brockton was then run out for 31 off 41.

Nomads were now 85-4 needing 10/11 per over. Stokes swung merrily, missed and was adjudged lbw, the ball striking his back leg in front of middle and off, whereupon with no hope of winning Olly Smith and Sanjiv Radia batted out to the close. Nomads were 47 runs short.

Both teams then tucked into the excellent tea and lingered long at the bar thereafter

Many thanks for Royal Household's hospitality and determination to play a match despite the infifferent weather in the early afternoon.
