Page & Brockton star but Nomads fail to force the win
N omads made their first trip to the stunning rural venue of Turville Park which is a stones throw from Ascot House where Nomads beat Kensington CC just a week or so ago.
The wicket looks like an absolute belter and Nomads had no hesitation in batting first upon winning the toss. Jamie Lane and Tom Brockton opened up for the visitors and their partnership realised 60 in good time before Lane (28) was unfortunate to pick out the Turville Park skipper Beardall at mid wicket with a well timed clip off his legs.
Rupert Style didnt last long, despite trying to run out Brockton with a suicidal single to the man at mid-off, Nomads no3 LBW to Beardall for just 6. Andy Stokes strode in at no4 to join Brockton who had just passed 50 and the pair added 78 for the 3rd wicket in just 15 overs. Brockton had now reached his hundred with a crunching cut shot off the bowling of Hancock (brother of former Gloucestershire cricketer Nick) who impressed with his off-spin and then took an extraordinary liking to Nick Henry's left arm spin who went for 54 in 5 overs in his 2nd spell, dispatching him for 5 maximums all back over his head and into the farmer's field.
The Nomads skipper was then caught at long-on off Brissett's first ball for 133. The good work was kept up by another swashbucking cameo from vice captain Andrew Smith and the visitors declared on 228-4 from just 38 overs.
Richard Clarke, playing his 2nd Nomads game of the season took an early scalp, but was a little off colour, but with Kensington opening bowler Saikat Barua charging in from the pavilion end Nomads were in the ascendancy. However, skipper Beardsall and Aussie no3 Wade were looking in good touch putting on 50 for the 2nd wicket. Brockton introduced himself into the attack and immediately had Wade caught by the ever safe hands of Rupert Style and then royally cleaned up Moberley with an in-ducker.
Ormiston replaced Brockton and lured the Turville Park skipper into an injudicious stroke which was pouched by Jonathan Elliott and with Chris Page wheeling away from the other end wickets began to tumble. Page accounted for Henry, Hancock and Brissett, who succumbed for 27 after giving it some serious long-handle, in an inspired spell of slow bowling and then had Henry (snr) LBW and youngster Hunt caught by Richard Clarke to complete his 5 wicket haul.
However Turville supremo and experienced hand Barney Bazell was proving an obdurate character and in tandem with Henry (jnr) looked to bat out the final few overs for the draw, which was achieved despite a testing spell from Elliott and a big shout for LBW from Chris Page from the penultimate ball of the game. Turville Park closing on 191-9 and Nomads agonisingly 1 wicket from what would have been a well deserved victory.
Both sides chatted for quite some time in the local village pub, supping the local ale in the warm evening sunshine. We look forward to returning to Turville Park for many seasons to come and our thanks to the tea ladies for a wonderful spread and the home side for their generous hospitality.
Nomads enjoy some beers at the Fox and Hounds after the match
